Scott Jack Grant, age 73, of Logan passed away Saturday, March 18, 2017 at his home in Logan. Funeral Memorial Mass is being held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 22 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Logan, with Father Raphael Masabakwa as Celebrant. The family would like to invite everyone to a time of lunch and fellowship at the Christian Church in Logan immediately following the service. The family will also greet friends from 9 a.m. until time of the service Wednesday at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Logan.
Scott was born June 23, 1943 in Charles City to Jack W. and Ruth V. (Arthur) Grant. Scott grew up in Lansing. He attended Upper Iowa University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Scott was a teacher in Monona from 1966-1969, and in 1969 came to Logan, where he was a teacher and a coach until 1999 when he retired.
Robert "Bob" Carl Batteen, age 73, of Lansing passed away March 9, 2017 at the Franciscan Mayo Hospital in La Crosse, WI during his valiant struggle with cancer. Sunday, April 2, all family and friends are invited to share in a "Celebration of Bob's Life" at T.J. Hunters in Lansing from 3-8 p.m.
Bob was born in Waukon September 6, 1943, the son of Harris and Laurayne (Johnson) Batteen of Lansing. He attended school in Lansing at Immaculate Conception Catholic grade school and St. George High School, graduating in 1961. From 1961 to 1964, he served in the United States Army. He attended basic training at Fort Riley, KS and served a six-month tour of duty in Germany.

James LeRoy Wolcott, 66, of Harpers Ferry passed away unexpectedly at home Saturday, March 11, 2017. Funeral Services were held Monday, March 20 at St. Ann-St. Joseph Catholic Church, Harpers Ferry, with Rev. John Moser as the Officiant. Inurnment will be at a later date at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Cemetery, Wexford.
James was born April 14, 1950 at Beaumont Hospital in Prairie du Chien, WI to Glenn and Mildred (Eggleston) Wolcott. He graduated from Seneca High School in 1968.
August 26, 1972 he was united in marriage with Mary Jo Valley and they had two daughters. Jim owned and operated J & J Electric in Harpers Ferry for 38 years. In the Harpers area, everyone knew if something was broken Jim was the guy to call.

You may have heard about Green Smoothies, but have you ever tasted one? If not, you may want to reconsider. Here is a short list of why you will gladly add a Green Smoothie to your daily diet. We have provided two recipes for you to try. Feel free to substitute any of your favorite fruits or vegetables.
To Lose Weight: When I work with weight loss patients, one of the easiest ways for them to start losing weight is to add more fruit, vegetables and water to their daily diets. My most successful weight loss clients are now eating a total of 8-10 servings of fruit or vegetables daily. To easily reach this goal; eat more vegetable-based soups, make omelets loaded with vegetables and drink green smoothies often.
Veterans Memorial Hospital is an official sponsor for the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), a service of the State of Iowa Insurance Division. SHIIP provides free-of-charge counseling and information to people with questions about Medicare, Medicare supplement insurance, long term care insurance, and claims filings. SHIIP can help solve problems like these:
• An Iowa woman held three long-term care policies, two Medicare supplement policies and five other health insurance policies of limited coverage. SHIIP reviewed the policies, pointing out duplication. As a result, she canceled several policies and saved $4,431 in insurance premiums annually.
• A northeast Iowa senior had 160 envelopes containing medical bills, Medicare statements and insurance statements. A SHIIP volunteer spent 26.5 hours sorting through the papers, organizing, and explaining to the client the status of each claim.
Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon is currently transitioning to a new electronic medical record system. This new system will now link to all departments, encompassing all areas of the hospital, including the billing department.
Because this is a new system, the hospital is requiring that every patient bring their health insurance card along with them so the information can be entered into this new system. Even patients who recently visited Veterans Memorial Hospital will need to show their insurance card to the hospital receptionist, even if they just recently did so.
Curt and Jan Brandsmeier of Waukon will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Curt Brandsmeier and Janice (Jan) Halverson were married March 18, 1967 in Lansing.
They are the parents of Kristine (Jeff) Butterbaugh of Mount Vernon and Brian (Sara) Brandsmeier of North Liberty. Grandchildren include Camden (16) and Rylan (14) Butterbaugh of Mount Vernon, and Axel (5) and Lumen (3) Brandsmeier of North Liberty.

Megan Stewart and Danny Pfiffner of Marion wish to announce their engagement and wedding. The couple exchanged vows in Cancun, Mexico February 25, 2017. A reception is planned at the Waukon Banquet Center for this Saturday, March 18 with a dance to follow.
The bride is the granddaughter of Lowell Stewart and the late Kathleen Stewart of Harpers Ferry. She is a 2011 Waukon High School graduate and a December 2016 graduate of UNI with a teaching degree.
The groom’s parents are Tom and Rita Pfiffner of Waukon. He is a 2011 graduate of Waukon High School and a graduate of Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC) in Sheldon with a degree as a Lineman. He is currently employed as a Lineman with Alliant Energy in Cedar Rapids.
Ross and Vanessa Ellefson of Harpers Ferry announce the birth of their daughter, Ava Catherine Ellefson, born March 2, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz. and measured 20 inches in length at the time of her birth.
Grandparents are Keith and Patrice Schulte of Waukon and Roger and Lynn Ellefson of Waterville.
