The Allamakee County Community Foundation (ACCF) Board is celebrating a milestone in its campaign to raise $450,000 toward a permanent endowment that will help address local needs for years to come. Thanks to gifts from board members and community leaders, and the support of an anonymous donor, over $225,000 has been raised for the Allamakee Forever Endowment Fund.
The initiative will help the Foundation build its endowment and provide an annual payout that will help address emerging needs and opportunities in communities across Allamakee County.
“The Forever Fund presents an opportunity for each of us to invest in the Foundation and thus the success of our communities,” says Betty Steege, foundation coordinator. “As an endowment, it will continue growing forever, and the flexible dollars it will provide can help address critical and emerging needs.”
The Allamakee County Emergency Management Agency wants to take this opportunity to notify the public of the intent to conduct a county-wide Tornado Drill and test of all city emergency warning sirens next Wednesday, March 29 at 10 a.m. This will allow Allamakee County to participate in the State of Iowa Tornado Drill as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, which is scheduled for March 27-31 this year. At approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, warning sirens in all six cities in the county will be activated and National Weather Service NOAA Weather Radios will be sent the drill as a Required Weekly Test (RWT) with normal alert tones followed by drill verbiage.
The Allamakee County Veterans Museum will be offering “Saturday Morning Cartoons of World War II” to the public in the meeting room of its museum in the former Vet’s Club building at 105 Allamakee Street in Waukon this Saturday March 25. Cartoons will play on the big screen continuously from 9 a.m.-noon.
These are the cartoons from before TV that helped train the troops, support the war effort and keep up morale. Those attending may come and go anytime they wish.
Museum winter hours include tours each Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon, and by appointment for groups of all kinds. There is no admission charge, and the museum is wheelchair accessible.
The Midwest Veterans of America will be hosting a Vietnam Day Fellowship event in honor of National Vietnam Veterans Day, which is observed March 29. That Wednesday, March 29, from 3-6:30 p.m., the Midwest Veterans of America will be hosting an all-you-can-eat Soup Supper at the Allamakee County Farm Bureau building, located at 14 1st Avenue NE in Waukon.
A raffle will also take place, with raffle winners announced at 5 p.m. and awards distributed to Vietnam Veterans also taking place at that time. Everyone is welcome to attend, especially surviving spouses of Vietnam Veterans. For additional information, call 563-568-5275.
As part of its Live & Learn: enriching lives through monthly learning series, Robey Memorial Library is offering a Tree-mendous Growth Workshop presented by Trees Forever Thursday, March 30 at 5:30 p.m. in the lower level Community Room of the library. Andrew Rust, Trees Forever Northeast Iowa Field Coordinator is presenting ways to increase tree canopy in Iowa. He will be joined by Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) District Forester Dave Asche. Workshop topics include: the benefit of trees; how to set a canopy goal; improving tree ordinances; what trees to plant; and more. Rust has a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from the University of Northern Iowa.
Allamakee Community Players, Inc. (ACPI) is once again teaming up with Empty Nest Winery to present a Dinner Theatre event Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1 from 6-9 p.m. each evening. This year’s production will be “Crazytown”, a comedy presentation that will be presented throughout a three-course dinner being served at Empty Nest Winery. “Crazytown” will take those in attendance on a tour of the most messed up town in America, from the police interrogation room where the nicest guy in town is issued a strange ultimatum, to the elementary school for a heated political debate on critical issues like tater tots. Welcome to Crazytown, where the town’s motto is: “Welcome to Crazytown!”
The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, March 20 to address a full agenda of matters including the review of the Fiscal-Year 2022 (FY22) Allamakee County Financial Audit, consideration of signing agreements relating to updated voting equipment, and review of the Post-Election Audit Report for the March 7 Special Election in Postville regarding a Hotel/Motel Tax.
The meeting was called to order by Board of Supervisors Chairperson Dan Byrnes with Supervisors Mark Reiser and Dennis Keatley in attendance. There was no Public Comment during the time allotted for that agenda item.
Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Board of Education Negotiations Committee members Allan Rissman and Erik Helgerson, along with ACSD Superintendent Jay Mathis, met Wednesday, March 1 with members of the Allamakee Community Education Association (ACEA) Negotiations Team of Jed Hemann, Lisa Snitker and Kelly Liddiard. Hemann gave the presentation for the ACEA for the 2023-2024 contract year. The negotiations began with the request of an increase of $1,250 in salary base to $33,685. The Association also suggested a one-year agreement on the salary schedule.

Three area high school students have been selected as individual performers at the Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA) All-State Speech Festival being held Monday, March 27 on the University of Northern Iowa campus in Cedar Falls. The trio of students were selected based on their performances at the Northeast State Individual Speech Contest held Saturday, March 11 at Starmont High School.
Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Business and Community Solutions is offering an Adult Springtime Painting Party class Tuesday, April 4 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the NICC Waukon Center, located at 1220 3rd Ave NW.
