ACSD Board of Directors approves calendar for 2023-2024 school year, purchases of playground equipment at West and new football uniforms

The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Board of Directors met Tuesday, February 21 due to the fact that there was no school Monday, February 20 because of the President’s Day holiday. The meeting began with a Public Hearing on the 2023-2024 School Calendar. No written or oral comments were heard.

Under the consent agenda, the following personnel matters were approved: Kids Club staff and hiring Allison Hagensick as West Elementary Special Education Teacher. The following transfers were approved: Mason Berns to At Risk Interventionist/Student Success Coordinator; Quinn Brennan to Sixth Grade Teacher; and Stacy Miner to Middle School Special Education Teacher. Two open enrollments out of the district were approved, as well as one open enrollment into the district. The board also approved a contract for Special Education service with the MFL/MarMac Community School District.

Participate in UNI Honor Band Festival ...

Members of the Waukon High School Band program participated in the UNI Honor Band Festival at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls February 9-11. The students attended rehearsals and master classes for their specific instrument during the two-day festival. The UNI Honor Band Festival consisted of three separate honor bands - Wind Symphony, Concert Band and Symphonic Band. Waukon High School had two band members, Gabe Goettel and Logan Lubahn (left to right in right half of above photo), participate in the Concert Band, and two members participate in the Symphonic Band, Moriah Downing and Annie Ellingson (left to right in left half of above photo). Participants in NEIC Music Festival ...

Members of the Waukon High School Band and Choir programs attended the Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) Music Festival held Monday, January 16 at Waverly-Shell Rock High School in Waverly. The NEIC Festival has changed its format recently, alternating between having an Honor Band and an Honor Orchestra. This year, the festival hosted an Honor Orchestra. The Honor Choir is held annually at the event. The students rehearsed throughout the day and presented a concert for the public that evening.

Eight Waukon High School Choir members participated in the Honor Choir, directed by Wartburg College Choir Director Dr. Lee Nelson. Those participating in the Honor Choir included: Left to right - Front row: Kylie Strittmater and Annie Ellingson (far left and far right in front row trio); Back row: Sarah Stock, Molly Peake, Caleb Perkins, Dekota Bechtel, Gabe Goettel and Olivia Dougherty. Kee Speech students compete in Individual Contests, eight performances advance to State ...

Kee High School hosted the Individual Conference Speech Contest Monday, February 20, hosting Speech students from their fellow Upper Iowa Conference schools. The six students pictured above from Kee took nine events and all received 1 ratings. The students also competed in the District Contest Saturday, February 25 at Decorah High School. These six Kee students (pictured left to right, including front to back) performed in the following 10 events (and received the following ratings, listed in parentheses): Rhianna Jones - After Dinner (2) and Solo Music Theatre (2), Cadan Evanson - Radio News (1) and Prose (1), Neva Peterson - Literary Program (1), Isabelle Hammell - Poetry (1), Riley Troendle - Prose (1) and Poetry (1), and Brendan Jones - Literary Program (1) and Original Oratory (1). Lansing City Council sets public hearing, approves mayoral letter of support for Iowa Great Places designation application

During its regular meeting Monday, February 20, the Lansing City Council set a public hearing date for the Maximum Property Levy. That public hearing will be held Monday, March 6 at 7 p.m. in Lansing City Hall.

IOWA GREAT PLACES
Andrew Boddicker presented the first full draft of the objectives and projects that will be listed as part of Lansing’s application for an Iowa Great Places designation through the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. After a brief discussion, the council approved having Mayor Melissa Hammell write a letter of support for the City’s application. The final vote on the Vision Plan is scheduled for March 6.

Soup and Salad Supper supports upgrades at Ferryville Village Hall

Ferryville Vision and Promotion Board is hosting its monthly Soup and Salad Supper at Ferryville Village Hall Thursday, March 9. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the meal will be served until 7 p.m. or until food runs out.

All of the freewill donation proceeds will help fund upgrades to the bathrooms at the Village Hall. For more information, watch for advertisements in The Standard and Northeast Iowa Extra.

Eagle Watching Day is this Saturday in Ferryville, WI

The 13th Annual Eagle Watching Day is scheduled for this Saturday, March 4 in Ferryville, WI at the Village Community Center located on State Highway 35, Great River Road. This program is sponsored by the Ferryville Tourism Council, co-sponsored by Friends of Pool 9, and free to the public.

Event activities are from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., with doors opening at 9 a.m. Returning to the program is the Decorah Raptor Resource Project Eagle Cam organization presenting at 12:30 p.m. on “Eagles of the Mississippi River”. John Howe and Amy Reis of the Raptor Resource Project and their team tell about eagle families and how they fly the Mississippi River Valley.

There are many eagle nests in the area, including a new one just south of Ferryville and another new nest on Hwy. 82 to Lansing. The Pool 9 section has more nests than in any other part of the Mississippi River.

Waukon girls wrestling team advances trio of competitors to State among other accomplishments during first-ever sanctioned season

The sport of wrestling for girls in Waukon has certainly had its moments in history, dating back as far as 1999 Waukon High School graduate Blair Young competing in the first-ever U.S. Girls Wrestling Association National Tournament. More recently, 2022 Waukon High School graduate Meridian Snitker competed in the first-ever Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA) Girls State Wrestling Tournament as a freshman in 1999, finishing as a State Runner-Up.

Kee girls basketball team puts together 5-16 season during 2022-2023 campaign with contributions from all grade levels

The Kee girls basketball team played through its 2022-2023 campaign to produce an overall record of 5-16 this winter, with all five of those wins coming in Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) play to place the Lady Hawks in sixth place in the final nine-team UIC standings. Those five wins came against four different Upper Iowa Conference teams throughout the season, including a season sweep of Postville by margins of five points or less in both of their match-ups and a pair of late-season victories by just a single basket each over Clayton Ridge and South Winneshiek teams the Kee girls had lost to by double-digit margins earlier in the season.
