William "Bill" Byrnes

William “Bill” J. Byrnes, 89, of Waukon, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon surrounded by family. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. John Moser officiating. Burial with military honors will be at St. Mary’s Hanover Cemetery in rural Waukon. Friends may greet the family from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church Wednesday. Martin - Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements.

Urgent Care returns during weekends at Veterans Memorial Hospital beginning January 7

Doctor, Urgent Care or ER ... Veterans Memorial Hospital has announced Urgent Care clinics will be returning during the weekends, beginning Saturday, January 7, and will be offered every Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Urgent Care is designed for treating injuries or illnesses requiring immediate care, but not serious enough to require an emergency department visit. Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) has announced Urgent Care clinics will be returning during the weekends, beginning Saturday, January 7.  Urgent Care will be offered from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday.

Urgent Care is designed for treating injuries or illnesses requiring immediate care, but not serious enough to require an emergency department visit. Patients may enter through the main entrance of the hospital and ask for Urgent Care. A registered nurse will assess each patient and decide if Urgent Care or ER is the level of care needed.

This fortunate child and his or her family will receive a large number of generous gifts compliments of area merchants. Make a New Year’s resolution to give blood in 2023; Next Blood Drive to be held January 5

The next LifeServe Blood Center blood drive will be held Thursday, January 5, from 12-5 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in south Waukon. Blood drives are held every month in Waukon. The LifeServe Blood Center of Iowa supplies Veterans Memorial Hospital with its blood and blood products.

The LifeServe Blood Center of Iowa is seeking donors to ensure a safe and plentiful blood supply in Iowa. Because there is no substitute for human blood, the need for donors is continuous. Many Iowans are encouraged to make donating blood on a regular basis their New Year’s resolution this year.

Flu shots still available at VMH Community and Home Care

Flu Shots are still available at the Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care Public Health Office. Flu shots are recommended for all those who have not yet received the vaccine, and they will be effective throughout the rest of the flu season.

Flu shots are available with an appointment each Wednesday afternoon during the weekly immunization clinic in the Community and Home Care Department located on the upper level of Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon.   The flu vaccine is plentiful, widely available, and is recommended for everyone six months of age and older. Appointments can be made by calling the Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care Public Health Office at 563-568-5660.

Flu vaccine, pneumonia vaccine, and a combination of flu and pneumonia vaccine will all be available in addition to all COVID vaccines. Tetanus shots are offered as well.

Marvin “Bud” and Marjorie (Richards) Strike of Waukon are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. The couple married December 28, 1952 at the United Methodist Church in Nashua.

Their family includes Linda (Jim) Ryan of Waukon, Jim (Deb) Strike of North Liberty and Rich (Jane) Strike of Cedar Falls. They have been blessed with seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

They will be celebrating their wedding anniversary with family during the holiday week.

Birth announcement: Collins

Jason and Jenna Collins of Waukon announce the birth of their daughter, Cora Lou Collins, born December 20, 2022 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 8 lbs. 4 ozs. and measured 20 inches in length at the time of her birth. She joins a sister, Lilly Marie Collins.

Grandparents are Darryl Sharon and the late Jill Sharon of Eitzen, MN and John and Von Collins of Waukon.

Registration open for Iowa Farm Bureau’s Young Farmer Conference

Farmers and agribusiness professionals, ages 18-35, are invited to attend Iowa Farm Bureau Federation’s Young Farmer Conference January 27-28, 2023, at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. “This year’s conference theme is ‘Our Roots Run Deep,’” said Megan Hansen, Young Farmer Advisory Committee chair and Pottawattamie County farmer. “As young farmers, we’re grateful for those who have paved the way before us - planting that seed. As the next generation, we are intent on solidifying those roots by learning from experts and each other at this popular event that typically attracts between 500 to 600 young farmers.”
