NICC working with area fire and rescue departments to meet EMT and Paramedic hiring needs

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies, and local fire and ambulance departments in northeast Iowa are working together with Northeast Iowa Community College to address an ongoing workforce shortage of certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic professionals.

The need for more trained EMS personnel to meet increasing demand in northeast Iowa communities follows a similar trend throughout the state. Winneshiek Medical Center (WMC), for example, maintains a paramedic service in Decorah and draws upon EMS volunteers in the communities of Decorah, Burr Oak, Bluffton, Calmar, Castalia, Festina, Fort Atkinson, Frankville, Jackson Junction, Highlandville, Ossian, Ridgeway and Spillville to meet demand for pre-hospital care. WMC employs 28 staff members in its ambulance service, but one-third of these personnel are expected to retire in the next five to seven years, according to Steve Vanden Brink, a 31-year veteran leader at WMC and Director of Ambulance.

Despite history, Waukon girls and boys bowling teams fall at Decorah; Senior Cody Huinker bowls program’s first-ever 300-pin perfect game

Pin perfection for historic Huinker... The scoreboard above tells the tale as Waukon boys bowling senior Cody Huinker stands proudly in front of the perfect game of 300 pins he rolled in the Indians’ 2768-2957 loss at Decorah Friday, December 2. As the 12 X’s across the bottom of that scoreboard indicate, Huinker bowled 12 consecutive strikes in his second game of the initial head-to-head round of competition against the host Vikings, rolling the first-ever perfect 300 game in the young history of the Waukon High School bowling program. That historic 300 game was coupled with a 216 first game to also help Huinker rewrite his own additional school record with a 516-pin series. Photo courtesy of Amanda Peterson.

Bowling in their first road competition of the new season, the Waukon girls and boys bowling teams both came up a bit shy of recording a victory in their Friday, December 2 competition at Decorah. However, all in attendance at the event were able to witness a first-time accomplishment for the Waukon bowling program, as Waukon boys bowling senior Cody Huinker continued to imprint his name at the top of the program’s bowling elite with the first perfect game of all strikes (300 pins) ever bowled by a Waukon High School bowler in competition.

That historic feat of 300-game perfection obviously established a new Waukon boys bowling record that can only be tied - and never be broken, bettering Huinker’s previous single-game school record of 280 pins. The Indian senior furthered his historic evening on the lanes by rolling a new single-series record of 516 pins in his two head-to-head games Friday, improving upon his own previous program standard of 492 pins.
