Register now for Waukon Park & Recreation Youth Fall Programs

Register for Waukon Park & Recreation Fall Recreation Youth Programs by the Friday, August 26 registration deadline. These programs include the following:

• 1st/2nd Grade Nerf Flag Football
• 3rd/4th Grade Flag Football
• 3rd/4th Grade Volleyball
• 5th/6th Grade Volleyball (Traveling).

Sign up now for Waukon Park & Recreation Adult Kickball League

Those who want to be active during the fall months should think about signing up an adult kickball team. The Waukon Park & Recreation league is open to sophomores (16 years old) in high school through adults.

Games will be played Monday nights (possibly some Tuesdays/Wednesdays if needed) at the Waukon Softball Complex (by the fairgrounds). The league will start either Monday, August 22 or August 29.

Those who would like to sign a team up or need questions answered should contact Jeremy Strub at director@waukonwellness.com or text/call 563-568-7131. Teams must be signed up by Wednesday, August 17.

Waukon Middle School Football Camp for those entering seventh or eighth grades is August 15-17; Pre-registration deadline is Saturday

The Waukon High School and Middle School football coaching staffs are planning to host the 2022 Waukon Indian Middle School Football Camp Monday through Wednesday, August 15-17. The camp, run by the Waukon football coaching staffs with help from current and former high school players, is a non-contact camp aimed at teaching those entering seventh and eighth grades this fall the fundamentals of offensive and defensive play for the Waukon football program.

Participants should plan to attend camp in shorts and a t-shirt, and should bring football cleats. Camp will take place at the middle school practice football field, which is located west of the Waukon High School parking lot.

The middle school camp for students entering seventh and eighth grades this fall will be held Monday-Wednesday, August 15-17. The camp will be held from 2:30-4:30 p.m. all three days.

Dr. Gary Dundee

Dr. Gary R. Dundee, 83, of Center Point died Monday, August 8, 2022. Funeral Mass was held Friday, August 12 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Urbana, and a Celebration of Life followed at American Legion Post 297, Center Point. Burial will take place at a later date at Cherry Mound Cemetery near Harpers Ferry. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Center Point assisted the family.

Gary was born July 11, 1939 in Iowa City, the son of Leland and Annabell (Cahalan) Dundee. He graduated from St. Patrick High School in Waukon and went on to obtain his doctorate degree in dentistry from the University of Iowa.

Alton “Gene” Johnson

Burial of Ashes with military rites will be held Wednesday, August 17 for Alton Eugene “Gene” Johnson of Waukon, who passed away December 29, 2021 at the age of 82. Burial will be held at Oakland Cemetery in Lansing at 11 a.m. Pastor Duane Smith will be officiating. All are welcome to attend.

Kathryn Van Brocklin

Kathryn M. Van Brocklin, 83, of Lansing passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at Thornton Manor surrounded by her loving family. A Christian Mass will be held Saturday, September 17 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing. A visitation will take place from 9 a.m. until the service at the church. Following graveside services, a luncheon and visitation will take place at the New Albin Community Center.

Kathryn Mabel Van Brocklin was born August 23, 1938 to Vincent and Edna (Halvorson) Strub in Lansing and graduated from St. George Catholic High School. She met the love of her life, who lived just up the road, and was united in marriage to Robert Van Brocklin November 11, 1960 in Lansing, where they built their life raising seven children.

Michael Jermier

Michael E. Jermier, 82, of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Urbandale and Waukon, died Sunday, July 17, 2022 surrounded by his children. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, August 20 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Bryan Robertson officiating at Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon. Friends may greet the family from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday. Burial will take place at 3 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. In lieu of flowers, memorials are welcome.

Michael “Mike” Edward Jermier was born August 11, 1939 in Charles City, the son of George and Irene (Self) Jermier. Mike grew up in Charles City, where he attended school and met and married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Hanson, August 15, 1959.

Marlene "Mickey" Cook

Marlene “Mickey” L. Cook, 84, of Waukon died Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon. Private family graveside services will be held at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon with Pastor Karla Johnson officiating. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements. Memorials can be made to Oakland Cemetery, c/o Diane Oesterle at 1031 Maud Road, Waukon, IA 52172.

Marlene “Mickey” Louise Cook was born August 15, 1937 in Prairie du Chien, WI, the daughter of Frederick and Martha (Schroeder) Goebel. She graduated from Harpers Ferry High School. When Mickey was younger, she and her family raised horses, taking them on trail rides and to horse shows.

Veterans Memorial Hospital Medical Clinic-Postville Open House August 11

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Medical Clinic-Postville will host an open house for all area communities to attend Thursday, August 11 from 5-7 p.m.  The Postville Clinic is located at 124 West Green Street in the same location of the former Postville Medical Clinic in downtown Postville.

Full-time clinic family nurse practitioner Michelle Crary will be onsite explaining her new family health care medical practice and schedule availability, as will Dr. Thomas McMullan, who remains on part-time with the clinic. Nurse Midwife Katy Maker, NP will also be onsite to explain her maternity and women’s health care practice she will be starting in just a few weeks at both the Postville and Waukon VMH medical clinics. Laura Baxter, Clinic Director; Casey Fisk, Clinic Medical Assistant; Shaina Kruger, Clinic RN; and Teresa Berg, Clinic Receptionist, will all be onsite offering tours of the remodeled facility.

Hospital to offer free blood sugar tests and massages at Waukon Corn Days August 4

Veterans Memorial Hospital will be offering free Blood Sugar Testing with immediate results at the Waukon Corn Days celebration Thursday, August 4. The tests will be performed by Angie Mettille, RN, Certified Diabetes Educator, from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Free chair massages will also be offered by Shannon Bernatz, Licensed Massage Therapist, who is a full-time massage therapist at the hospital.

Veterans Memorial Hospital staff will also have goodies bags with educational material available. First Aid supplies will also be available for anyone in need.
