Handmade quilts presented to Thornton Manor...

Thursday, September 16, Thornton Manor in Lansing was honored to receive from Arlis Myhre of New Albin and Eileen Smith of Lansing 50 handmade quilts which the two ladies had made over the last year. The presentation started with a very special blessing of the quilts by Pastor Carter Jorgensen (photo below), husband of Thornton Manor’s new recreation therapist Alyssa Jorgensen.

Thornton Manor Environmental Services Director Diane DeLong had asked the two ladies if they would be interested in making some quilts to make each resident’s room more home-like. The ladies agreed without hesitation and got started right away.

Kee football fans continue to have long fingernails as the undefeated Hawks cruised to another easy victory Friday, September 24 with a 66-0 Homecoming win against Central Elkader, eclipsing the 60-point scoreboard mark for the fourth consecutive game and likely having done so in their season opener as well as they led, 16-0, after just one quarter of play in an August 27 home game against West Central called off soon after that initial frame due to stormy weather. The Hawks have now outscored their opponents 280-47 as they prepare for the home stretch of the regular season with games against Edgewood-Colesburg, Midland, and a highly anticipated regular season-ending showdown with highly-ranked Easton Valley.

Waukon football team uses balanced offense to power past Oelwein for 56-12 District 4 road win

by Perry Hesse

While the Oelwein Huskies were celebrating Homecoming Friday night, September 24, it was strictly a business trip for the Waukon Indians, who improved to 4-1 on the season with a 56-12 victory in that Class 2A District 4 match-up. That final result yielded the Indians’ highest point total of the season behind a fairly balanced attack providing almost 400 yards of total offense. Waukon collected 224 yards through the air along with 163 more on the ground, scoring multiple times via each method.

“Passing is largely about timing and that develops with more repetitions at game speed,” said Waukon football coach Chad Beermann of his team’s aerial attack that produced an average of nearly 38 yards per reception and scored on half of just six passing attempts on the night.
