Waukon City Council discusses Walk-On Waukon sidewalk project, variety of clerical and financial items in regular session

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, December 3 to discuss a full agenda of items including the Walk-On Waukon sidewalk project, a Water/Sewer Department hiring and revisions to city code involving delinquent utility accounts. There was no Public Comment and the council moved into Departmental Reports.

Police Chief Phil Young indicated that it was a busy weekend and discussed the response to a fire in the trailer court. Street Superintendent Keith Burrett discussed a recent snow maintenance class that he attended in Dubuque and that Blake’s Excavating had completed creek dredging work.

Lansing City Council hears update on proposed splash pad project among variety of other items during regular session

The regular session of the Lansing City Council was held Monday, December 3. Discussion centered around the Fehr Graham engineering agreement for the Clear Creek Sewer Project, a sewer line bill regarding two Main Street businesses, the Northern Engraving Well, a wireless squad car system, a splash pad update and a Marina Board update.

The council approved the motion for an engineering agreement with Fehr Graham regarding an additional $32,000 engineering fee for completion of the Clear Creek Sewer Project.

The council was advised that T.J. Hunter’s Banquet Hall and the Century Link building’s private sewer line had a blockage that was professionally resolved recently. The $800 bill for the project will be sent to T.J. Hunter’s Banquet Hall owner Jason Drape, and the two property owners will negotiate what amount of the bill owners of the Century Link building will pay.

Main Street Lansing Food Drive during Small Business Saturday yields 351 pounds of food, cash donated to LIFT

During Small Business Saturday, November 24, Main Street Lansing hosted a food drive to benefit the Lansing Iowa Food Trust (LIFT). In one day, the drive collected 351 pounds of food and $95 in cash donations.

In addition, donors were invited to enter a drawing for gift cards to local businesses. Winners included:

All-State Chorus selections ...

This year, three students from the Waukon High School Vocal Music Department under the direction of Sarah J. Bieber Palmer were selected to participate in the Iowa All-State Music Festival, the highest individual honor attainable to Iowa high school vocal musicians. Thousands of students from across the state of Iowa auditioned for All-State Chorus Saturday, October 20. Selected for the 600-member All-State Chorus were (left to right in above photo) junior Oonagh Ahouse (Alto 1), daughter of Ed and Marlene Ahouse of Waukon; sophomore Aidan Jones (Bass 2), son of Gregg and Maura Jones of Waukon; and senior Micah Treptau (Tenor 2), son of Tom and Cami Treptau of Waukon. The 2018 All-State Music Festival was held Saturday, November 17 at Iowa State University’s Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

All-Conference musicians ...

Monday, November 19, 26 students from the Waukon High School Music Department participated in the Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) Music Festival. The All-Conference musicians rehearsed throughout the day and performed a concert that evening to a packed audience in the Decorah High School Auditorium. The conductors for this year’s festival were Zachary Durlam - choir, Leyla Sanyer - orchestra, and Steven Stickney - band. The students are under the direction of choir director Sarah Palmer and band director Jo Ann Sherman. Those students participating are pictured in the surrounding photos and include the following:

EACSD Board of Directors hears presentation on Work Based Learning program; Jim Mauss hired to return as Kee baseball head coach

The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Eastern Allamakee Community School District (EACSD) was held at Kee High School in Lansing Monday, November 19. The meeting was called to order by Heather Schulte, Board President, with several staff members and student visitors in attendance.

After the adoption of the agenda, several FFA students from the high school chapter and their advisor, Ray Rankin, gave a presentation on their participation at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN. For the first time in school history, four FFA students also participated in the national level Milk Quality and Products competition and ended with a final ranking of 33rd in the national competition.

Top entries in Waukon Wellness Center’s Fifth Annual “Turkey Trot” 5K Run/Walk ...

The Waukon Wellness Center hosted its fifth annual “Turkey Trot” 5K Run and Walk Thanksgiving morning, November 22. Approximately 110 participants (pictured below at the starting line the day of the event) took part in the event, with first-place finishers in five of the 12 age categories receiving a frozen turkey (indicated by an asterisk [*] in the list below) and the top three placewinners in each age category taking home medals to commemorate their effort. The event was held to advocate wellness in the local community and also as a fundraiser for the community tennis court project, raising $1,200 for that cause. The top entries in each age division at the annual event are pictured above and listed as follows:

Kee boys basketball team drops season-opening pair at UIC foes South Winn and Postville

The Kee boys basketball team got its 2018 season off to a winless start, falling to a pair of Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) opponents on the road. The Hawks first fell at South Winneshiek, 62-23, Tuesday, November 27 before falling, 40-29, at Postville Friday, November 30.

The Hawks were next scheduled to host Clayton Ridge Tuesday, December 4 before playing Lanesboro, MN at Luther College Saturday, December 8. The Kee boys will then host both Turkey Valley, Tuesday, December 11, and Central Elkader, Friday, December 14.

Kee girls basketball team opens UIC season with pair of road wins

The Kee girls basketball team got its Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) season underway with a sweeping week on the hardcourt, winning both of its match-ups this past week, both of them on the road. The Lady Hawks kicked off their UIC season with a 46-33 victory at South Winneshiek Tuesday, November 27 before dominating Postville on the road by a 63-13 final result Friday, November 30.

The Kee girls will return home Tuesday, December 4 to host Clayton Ridge before playing Houston, MN at Decorah High School Saturday, December 8. The Lady Hawks will then remain at home for all of next week, hosting Turkey Valley Tuesday, December 11 and then Central Elkader Friday, December 14.
