Meeting minutes of the Allamakee County Historical Preservation Commission from March 29 gathering

The Allamakee County Historical Preservation Commission met in open meeting Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. at 408 3rd Ave. NE, in Waukon.

Present were Gloria Jackson, Lois Wiedenmann, Karen Galema and Larry Wolfe. Absent were Jean Huffey, Betty Helgerson, and Betty Zarwell.

The meeting opened with the reading of the minutes of the group’s Feb. 4 meeting. Members completed filling out biographical sketches to be sent on to the state. The year-end reports to State and National Parks Service were completed by Karen and Gloria. Goals for the year were discussed with several ideas enthusiastically supported. Plans pending.

The Historical Site Survey done by John Simmons, Gus Kerndt and others is to be updated. A fair booth is being considered. It was suggested that Kerry McGrath of the State Historical Society be invited to conduct a seminar for new members and for Friends of this Commission at one of our meetings.

In order for this commission to be most effective, it is necessary to work closely with other historical and economic groups. Larry Wolfe will be the representative of the Allamakee County Historical Society on this commission. The National Trust is to be contacted to see if our group might become a member of that trust. The idea of a History Fair or articles by school children on local historical sites is to be looked into. There was discussion of what ways we can educate and encourage historic preservation on a more personal level in our county.

The next meeting is set for May 10 at Robey Memorial Library in Waukon, at 7 p.m. This is an open meeting for all interested person.
