Harry Sander

Harry C. Sander, 83, long time resident of Waukon, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005 in Houston, Texas. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 9 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Services in Houston were held February 5 at Brookside Funeral Home, Cypress Creek Chapel. Martin Funeral Home handled local arrangements.
Harry Charles Sander was born October 25, 1921, in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Otto and Selina (Megorden) Sander. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ, graduated from Waukon High School, and attended Waukon Junior College.
On August 14, 1947, he married Adeline Ruth Depping at Zion UCC in Waukon. Harry spent his working life farming on the Union Prairie Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, farm that has been in the family since his grandfather purchased it in 1891. As a farmer, he cared deeply for the land and was very attentive to the livestock he raised. He also worked as an assessor in the Allamakee County Assessor's Office, was an agent for Ewing Real Estate in Waukon, and during the 1990s, drove and delivered cars for RW Pladsen Motors of Waukon. Harry moved to Houston in November of 1998 to be near his daughter.
Harry and Adeline enjoyed traveling, playing cards in their neighborhood 500 club, and were active members of Zion United Church of Christ where Harry served on the council for a number of years. In more recent years he enjoyed going out to eat, remained an avid reader, and loved to spend time visiting with friends and co-workers. While living in Texas, Harry was named the Resident of the Year in 2003 at Hearthstone Assisted Living Center and Resident of the Month at Park Manor in 2004.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Sander and her husband Bob Troy of Houston; a sister, Celia (Francis) Garrett of Lansing; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Sander of Michigan and Verona Sander of Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Adeline, who died in 1997; and three brothers, Robert, Donald, and Curtis.
Casketbearers were Adam Quandahl, Kirk Snitker, Steve and Brian Stortz, and Scott and Matt Garrett.
