Girls sweep regular season with wins over Oelwein, WSR

For the second straight year, the Waukon girls basketball team rounded out the regular season without a loss. The Indians downed Northeast Iowa Conference competitors Oelwein and Waverly-Shell Rock in the final week of the season to take their second consecutive league title.
Decorah finished second in the NEIC with a 10-2 mark while Charles City took third after an 8-4 season.
Overall, the top-rated Tribe has won 49 consecutive contests and sports a 21-0 standing for the season.

Waukon clinched its second consecutive NEIC title Tuesday, Feb. 8 with a 79-44 victory at Oelwein.
The Tribe wasted little time establishing themselves on the hardcourt, taking a 16-0 lead with just over two minutes left in the first period. Oelwein finally got on the board late in the quarter, but Waukon had built a 25-6 lead after just eight minutes.
The Huskies' scoring accelerated in the second, but the Indians still took a sizeable 45-21 lead into halftime.
Oelwein couldn't cut into the Indians' advantage in the third or fourth frames and the Tribe went on to hand the host Huskies a 77-49 conference loss.
Although the final score was very much in Waukon's favor, coach Gene Klinge hopes his team will improve in certain areas. "We were off to a good start, but then they made a little run in the second and scored four easy buckets. I think we might've gotten too relaxed defensively."
One positive note on the defensive end was the pair of charges Waukon took. "Emily (Garrett) and Stephanie (Snitker) each took a charge," Klinge noted. "We've been working on getting position and drawing the charge."
Offensively, the Indians had some difficulties behind the arc, landing just six of 17 three-point attempts. "We ended up shooting about 50 percent from the field, but we didn't shoot the ball real well all night. We had a lot of easy looks that we just couldn't knock down," the coach added.
The Waukon coach feared the Tribe's late night Monday would have an effect on the court. Klinge said, "I was a little concerned about a letdown after a nice win at Waterloo West the night before, but they came out and played hard and clinched the conference title."
Senior guard Sam Reiser poured in a game-high 26 points. Snitker finished with 15 points and Garrett ended the night with ten.
Senior guard Carlyn Wacker dished out a team-leading six assists and Garrett added five.
Snitker completed a double double with 11 boards. Junior forward Tiffany O'Neill pounded the glass for eight rebounds and Garrett grabbed seven.
Reiser snagged five steals and sophomore guard Alex Langland and junior forward Ruth Rolling grabbed two.
Garrett also collected a pair of steals and blocked two Husky shots.

Oelwein proved to be an easy win for the Tribe in the night's junior varsity competition as well. Waukon posted a hefty 59-26 victory.
The Indians wasted little time, jumping to a 21-9 advantage after the first quarter. Waukon outscored its hosts in the second by a 14-5 count to take a 35-14 lead into the locker room.
Oelwein nearly equalled the Indians' third period output, with Waukon posting seven points to the Huskies' five, but the Tribe left no doubt in the fourth, outdoing Oelwein by a 17-7 count to score the NEIC win.
Waukon's focus on defense was a key factor in the win said JV coach Dave Schoeberlein. "Once again our defense on the full court really helped our game. We had a great start to the game in the first quarter."
The Tribe grabbed a 40-20 rebound advantage for the night, which included 23 offensive boards while limiting the Huskies to just five second chances. "We really hit the offensive boards and that in return really helped our offensive total," the coach added.
All 16 members of the Indian squad saw time in the game, ensuring the Tribe had fresh legs throughout the contest. "We were able to finish the game just as hard as we started. A total team effort the whole game is always our goal."
Lynsey Mellick had a double double with 24 points and 12 steals. She also snagged four boards.
Hannah Jones dumped in nine points and Leanna Hammel had nine. Both grabbed four rebounds.
Karisa Sickels ripped down a team-high eight rebounds. Alex Langland collected seven steals and two assists.

vs. Waverly Shell Rock...
Waukon capped off an undefeated regular season Friday, Feb. 11, handing Waverly-Shell Rock an 80-40 loss. The win also marked the second consecutive year the Tribe went 12-0 in NEIC play.
The Indians outscored the Go-Hawks 32-5 after just one quarter and maintained a 47-23 advantage at halftime.
In the third, the Tribe recorded another good showing, posting 24 points to Waverly's two. The Go-Hawks managed to outscore Waukon in the final eight minutes, but the Tribe was well out of reach and scored the win.
Klinge was very pleased with what he saw in the initial quarter. "In the first quarter we played as well offensively as we have all year. We executed our offense and took good shots and got the ball in the basket."
The Tribe's defense was a bit lax in the second, however, allowing the Go-Hawks to outscore their hosts 18-15 for the quarter. "In the second we just went away from what we had done in the first, but we discussed that at halftime and came out and played hard again in the third," the coach commented.
Reiser had a record-breaking night, landing ten of 12 shots from two-point range and five of six threes. She also hit both of her free throw attempts. She scored 37 points to reset the school record for most points in a game, breaking her own mark of 36 she set last winter against Postville.
"Sam probably had her most complete game of the year," noted Klinge. "She shot well and defended well. She just had a super game." Reiser also collected five steals.
Snitker posted 12 points and 12 rebounds. She also denied a Go-Hawk shot.
Garrett finished the night with 11 points and eight rebounds.
O'Neill reeled in seven boards and blocked a shot.
Wacker dished out six assists and picked up four steals.

Waukon's junior varsity squad wrapped up the season with a 59-32 victory over the Go-Hawks. The Tribe completed the year with a fine 16-4 record and were 9-3 in NEIC action.
Waukon grabbed an 11-6 lead after just one period and marched to a 27-14 advantage by halftime.
Waverly played the Tribe much closer in the third quarter, scoring 12 points to the Indians' 15, but Waukon rolled in the fourth period, outscoring the Go-Hawks 17-6 en route to the win.
According to Schoeberlein, the Indians went out on a very positive note, adding that a major factor in the night was free throw shooting. "We played perhaps our best game of the season. The tale of the game was the foul line. We did not foul very much compared to what we have done in the past and we also really hit our free throws."
The Indians were also able to limit turnovers to 17 while picking up 18 steals. "Our turnovers were also very limited and our defense really caused WSR to turn the ball over."
Leanna Hammel's 19 points and five steals paced the Indians. Sickels ended the night with nine points and four boards.
Langland contributed three assists and four steals and Mellick also picked off the Go-Hawks on four occasions.
Jessica Larkin had a team-high five rebounds and Betsy Farley had four.

Postseason action is all that remains for the Indians. "This is a new season. Everybody starts at 0-0," Klinge said, adding that "technically, everybody's got the same win streak we do. All it takes now is just one bad game and we have to stay home."
Waukon will open the postseason this Thursday, Feb. 17, hosting New Hampton in a 7 p.m. contest. Doors open at 6 p.m. The winner advances to regional semifinal action Saturday, Feb. 19 in Decorah. The winner will face the victor of the Decorah-North Winn/Crestwood contest also held Thursday.
