Louis Moe

Louis A. Moe, 69, Big Lake, Alaska, died Saturday, January 8, 2005, after a short stay in the Providence Hospital in Anchorage and a battle with emphysema.
Louis Atkin Moe was born June 14, 1935, in Allamakee County, Iowa, in a farm house near Lansing to Hans Jacob and Mame Moe. He attended school in Waterville and graduated from Waterville High School in 1953.
After graduation, Louis served a short term with the Navy and went to Indianapolis, Ind., upon his discharge. There he met Betty Reasor. They married December 20, 1957, in Indianapolis. After their marriage, they moved to Iowa where they lived for several years.
Louis worked with the Waterville Volunteer Fire Department from 1965 to 1975, which led to the stories he told throughout the years. He also worked at Wilson's Packing House in Cedar Rapids. He also had many other odd jobs throughout the years and gained many close friends.
While in Waterville, he was a member of Old East Paint Creek Lutheran and Waterville Lutheran churches.
In January of 1976, he and his wife decided to move to Anchorage where they purchased a boarding house that they ran until 1999. Lou also held odd jobs in Anchorage, working with Sand Cove Union 76, Sears Automotive, and Pizza Hut.
Lou loved to give people a helping hand. He also enjoyed going on road trips. On those trips, he could pop in and visit with family and friends and had his own bedroom in many homes across the country.
Lou was loved by many and will be missed by anyone blessed to know him.
Lou was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Betty Helen (Reasor) Moe.
He is survived by his children, Julia "Kathy" Henry of Anchorage, Carl L. Moe of Big Lake, Karen L. Karpinski of Waupaca, Wis., and Alan L. Moe of Thorntown, Ind.; a sister, Hilma Rathbun of Waterville; a brother, Walter Moe of Florida; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held June 14, 2005, in Alaska, in honor of Lou's birthday. Friends may contact family for details.
