The Waukon girls track season neared completion in very familiar fashion, as for the third consecutive year the Indian track girls have qualified three sprint relay events for the Class 3A field of the Iowa High School State Track Meet. This year, however, those sprint relays will have additional company at that season grand finale.
The track Tribe’s fast and furious foursome of senior Lyvia Bulman, juniors Nicole Behrend and Madison Snitker and sophomore Regan Wasson combined their efforts to earn an automatic return trip to the State Meet with team-leading runner-up finishes in both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays at their Class 3A State Qualifying Meet at Decorah Thursday, May 14. Those two runner-up finishes both came behind perennial power Decorah, in 52.69 seconds in the 4x100 and in 1:48.52 in the 4x200, but accounted for just half of the Indians’ State Meet qualifications this year, as two other event results were also good enough to make the final performance cut to be able to compete among the final elite 24 competing in each event at the season grand finale.
The three upperclassmen in that above-mentioned sprint crew were also joined by sophomore Lanci Bulman in finishing fourth in the 800 meter sprint medley in a time of 1:54.75 good enough to rank them 20th among the final 24 teams to make the State Meet qualification cut. That performance qualification makes this the third consecutive season the trio of Lyvia Bulman, Behrend and Snitker have qualified for the State Meet in each of those three sprint relays. New to the qualification this year, Lanci Bulman joined Behrend on the 100 meter legs of that sprint medley crew, Snitker blazed the 200 meter trail and Lyvia Bulman anchored the 400 meter circuit to qualification just over one second better than the final cut-off time.
Another new sophomore face to State Meet qualification this season also brings with her a new event in comparison to recent seasons dominated by just sprint relay qualification. Erika Johnson soared a career-best 16’2.75” to finish third in Thursday’s State Qualifying long jump competition, earning herself a number-13 ranking among the Class 3A top-24 to qualify for this season’s grand finale.
