NRCS Program Sign-Up Deadlines Approaching - Apply Soon to Be Considered in the First Round
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is encouraging Iowa agricultural producers and landowners to start the application process now for conservation programs that provide both financial and technical assistance. The first-round application cutoff is expected in October. Applications received after that date will continue to be accepted, but they will be placed into the second-round ranking period.
Natural Resources Conservation Service programs are designed to help farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners address resource concerns while improving productivity and profitability. Some of the most popular opportunities include:
• Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP): Offers technical and financial assistance for working lands, including field crops, specialty crops, organic, confined livestock and grazing, and non-industrial private forest land. Rather than take land out of production, EQIP helps farmers maintain or improve production while conserving natural resources on working landscapes.
• Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP): Offers technical and financial assistance to help agricultural and forest producers take their conservation efforts to the next level. The program is designed to compensate agricultural and forest producers who agree to increase their level of conservation by adopting additional conservation activities and maintaining their baseline level of conservation. CSP is for producers who are passionate about conservation and environmental stewardship.
Across the county, some of the most common and effective practices funded through these programs include:
• Cover crops to reduce erosion, improve soil health, and build resilience against extreme weather.
• No-till and strip-till systems to improve soil structure and water infiltration.
• Grassed waterways, field borders, and filter strips to trap sediment and nutrients before they reach streams.
• Wetland restorations and prairie buffer plantings that improve wildlife habitat and reduce downstream flooding.
• Rotational and prescribed grazing systems to improve pasture productivity while protecting sensitive areas.
• Pollinator habitat plantings that benefit bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
Getting your application in early allows NRCS to evaluate your resource concerns and design a conservation plan that meets your goals while improving soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitat.
