Ending up playing a rare Thursday night game in order to avoid heavy rain forecasted for its usual Friday game night, the Waukon football team traveled to the home of the other Indians in Class 2A District 3, a winless Forest City team, Thursday, September 17, to open district play for both squads. Even though they avoided any rain that falls from the sky, Waukon’s grid Tribe stormed into Forest City and rained all over the other Indians’ Homecoming for this year by jumping to a 40-0 halftime lead on the way to a 52-6 victory behind a ground game yardage result not seen from a Waukon football team in nearly 20 years.
A pair of career-high rushing nights from the senior backfield pair of Tristyn Crawford and Gabe McCormick fueled the highest single-game rushing total for Waukon football, 424 yards, since a 538-yard team performance in a 67-6 Indian win over Fillmore Central out of Minnesota to open the 2007 season. That result was paced by then senior Ted Kelly’s 255 yards, with fellow senior Colin Egan adding 106 yards and junior Brandon Ronan also nearing the 100-yard mark with 94 yards. Egan ran in a trio of touchdowns that night, and both Kelly and Ronan added a pair of rushing tallies each, as Kelly averaged 15 yards on his 17 carries and both Egan and Ronan averaged just over six-and-a-half yards per carry on 16 and 14 tries, respectively. The Indians as a team averaged just under 10 yards per carry on a total of 56 rushes during a game where just one pass was completed in five tries by senior quarterback Nick Kruger, but that one completion went for a 26-yard touchdown strike to fellow senior Marcus Tweedy.
The Indians are next scheduled to return home for another Class 2A District 3 battle this Friday, September 25, as North Fayette Valley comes to town. Much like the Indians, the TigerHawks bring an even, 2-2 season record into the contest, coming off a 24-19 loss at home to Osage in their District 3 opener this past Friday, September 18. North Fayette Valley also shares a loss at West Delaware in common with Waukon, but at a 61-25 result, while the TigerHawks’ two wins on the season both came at home, 43-34 over Independence and 41-6 over Sumner-Fredericksburg.
