Entries sought for Memorial Day Parade

The Allamakee County Veterans Affairs Office is seeking entries for the 2010 Memorial Day Parade to be held in Waukon Monday, May 31. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. in front of the Allamakee County Courthouse and make its way down Allamakee Street, Spring Avenue and Rossville Road to Oakland Cemetery, where the traditional Memorial Day Program will take place.
Anyone interested in having an entry in the parade is invited to contact Heather Homewood at the Allamakee County Veterans Affairs Office in Waukon at 563-568-6135.

Clean-Up Day in Waukon rescheduled to this Saturday

Due to cold, wet conditions, the Clean-Up Day originally scheduled for this past Saturday, May 8 in the Waukon area has been rescheduled to this Saturday, May 15. Volunteers are still being asked to help take part in the event in an effort to clean up and maintain the community.
Interested participants are asked to meet at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 15 at the Allamakee County Courthouse in Waukon, and groups will then be dispersed to do some roadside clean-up, garbage pick-up through town, and also some painting of shelters/structures at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds.

Local Democrats visit with Lt. Governor Judge

Lt. Governor Patty Judge attended the Fourth District Democratic Convention in Mason City Saturday, April 24 and is pictured at right with local residents, left to right, Dan White of Postville, Lorna Kerndt of Waukon, Lt. Republicans attend District Convention

Allamakee County Republicans from Lansing, Postville, Waterville and Waukon traveled to the Fourth District Republican convention Saturday, May 1. The Allamakee delegation was joined by just under 400 folks from the 28 counties in Iowa's fourth congressional district.

Waukon teen accepted as State Finalist in National American Miss Iowa pageant

Kelly Politowitz, a Waukon High School junior and the 17-year-old daughter of Ed and Darla Politowitz of Waukon, has been chosen as a State Finalist in the National American Miss Iowa state pageant to be held June 26-27 at the Bucksbaum Fine Arts Center on the campus of Grinnell College in Grinnell.

Mackenzie Lyons selected for 2010 Celebration Iowa Singers

Mackenzie Lyons, daughter of Dennis and Sherri Lyons of Waukon, has been selected to sing alto with the Celebration Iowa Singers and Jazz Band, a select high school touring ensemble that will perform more than 30 shows across the state of Iowa this summer.
Lyons, a senior student at Waukon High School, was selected from a pool of Iowa high school music students who auditioned at four locations across the state in March.

Happy Now Friesians participate at Midwest Horse Fair

The Friesian horses of Happy Now Friesians owned by John and Alice Burke of Lansing thrilled crowds at the 2010 Midwest Horse Fair held in Madison, WI April 16 and 17, as Dan Griffin of Spring Grove, MN drove four Friesians (pictured at right) across the arena on a Roman chariot. Griffin himself was dressed in full Roman Centurion armor. After trotting the team, he spurred them on, guiding the team around the arena, then through tight turns and finally to a standstill salute.

Jet's Meat Processing wins awards

Jet’s Meat Processing in Waukon was recently recognized as one of the best meat processors in the state, winning several awards from the Iowa Meat Processors Association February 20. Those awards included Grand Champion honors in small diameter smoked cooked sausage and in specialty ham, and Reserve Grand Champion honors in jerky and in dried beef. Jet’s was also awarded the Grand Champion Prize for whole muscle beef jerky at the “Best of the Midwest” competition sponsored by the Kansas Meat Processors Association held in Kansas March 27.

PAW's first annual "Spring into Action" fundraiser to assist animals with emergency care

People for Animal Welfare (PAW) will be hosting its first annual "Spring into Action" fundraiser this Saturday, May 1 in an effort to raise funds to be used to help animals in emergency situations. The event will take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Danan Lansing Memorial Building at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds in Decorah.
