Power Train Fitness moving into new studio

Power Train Fitness opened for business in April, 2009 at the home of Amy and Kim Welch north of Waukon, but is relocating to a new studio. The business offers personalized kettlebell fitness training, with classes currently offered at 5:30 and 6:15 a.m. Monday through Friday, and Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. Introductory classes are available by appointment by calling 563-568-4812.

Cayla Nolting of Waukon competing in video contest for diabetes awareness

Cayla Nolting, nine-year-old daughter of Chad and Cheryl Nolting of Waukon, has entered a video in the Lenny the Lion Video Contest sponsored by Medtronic Minimed, and her video is one of 20 finalists from across the nation selected to compete for the contest's grand prize.
Cayla was diagnosed with diabetes at age three, and has been on an insulin pump since age five. Medtronic is a manufacturer of insulin pumps and other products used in diabetes treatment.

Volunteers needed for tree planting May 1

The local Trees Forever chapter is seeking volunteers to assist in planting over 100 trees in the Pamida and Waukon City Park area Saturday, May 1. Interested participants are asked to meet at the Pamida parking lot at 8 a.m. Saturday and to bring shovels and rakes, with an anticipated completion time of 12 noon should enough volunteers get involved. Rain date will be May 8.

Waukon partners with Black Hills Energy and Trees Forever to bring "Power of Trees"

Volunteers and community leaders in Waukon are planting trees to provide more shade, save energy and beautify the community, all through the “Power of Trees.” The local effort is a partnership between the community, Trees Forever and Black Hills Energy’s company-wide Power of Trees program and is designed to educate the public about the benefits of trees by providing the tools and resources for community tree plantings.

Local 4-H'ers named to State 4-H Council

Morgan Heim (right), daughter of Tom and Bev Heim of New Albin, and Bobbi Jo Wild (left), daughter of Robert and Bonnie Wild of Lansing, were recently selected for membership on the State 4-H Council. Heim and Wild are two of nine youth who will represent northeast Iowa on a 40-member State 4-H Council later this year. As State 4-H Council members, Heim and Wild will serve as ambassadors for the state 4-H program by providing input on 4-H program issues, planning and executing state events, and practicing leadership, citizenship, and communication skills.

Weekend ATV accident injures Waukon couple

The Allamakee County Sheriff's Office received a report of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident around 5:14 p.m. Saturday, April 10 that hospitalized a Waukon couple. The accident report indicates that an ATV operated by Raymond Matthew Mahr, age 42, of Waukon overturned on Highway 76 near its intersection with County Road A26, ejecting both him and his wife, 50-year-old Donna Jean Mahr of Waukon. Both occupants were transported to Gundersen-Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI, where they were each listed in good condition as of Tuesday morning, April 13.
