Kee girls basketball team gets back on winning track with two more victories

The Kee girls basketball team got back on the winning track this past week after just its second loss of the season in the week prior, starting up another winning streak with back-to-back wins at home. The Lady Hawks were able to pull out a 48-46 win over Starmont Tuesday, January 27 before running away from West Central Friday, January 30 by a 55-28 end result.
Improving to 16-2 overall, 11-2 in the Upper Iowa Conference, the Hawks were scheduled to travel to North Fayette Valley Tuesday, February 3 before hosting their final regular season home game Friday, February 6 against Clayton Ridge and then bringing the regular season schedule to a close with a Monday, February 9 non-conference road game at DeSoto, WI. The Kee girls will then begin postseason tournament play Thursday, February 12 at home against Central Elkader at 7 p.m. and will host a second-round game as well Tuesday, February 17.

Kee boys basketball team falls in pair of Upper Iowa Conference home games

The Kee boys basketball team started a final regular season home stretch with a pair of losses this past week. The Hawks were handed a 61-57 loss by Starmont Tuesday, January 27 before also falling to Upper Iowa Conference-leading West Central, 72-48, Friday, January 30.
Holding a 2-16 overall season record, 1-12 in the Upper Iowa Conference, the Hawks were slated to host North Fayette Valley Tuesday, February 3 and Clayton Ridge Friday, February 6 before wrapping up their regular season schedule with a Tuesday, February 10 home date with Seneca, WI. Kee will then open postseason tournament play Monday, February 16 at a site and against an opponent yet to be determined as of press deadline.

Waukon girls basketball team wins one of four during busiest week of the season

The Waukon girls basketball team battled through its busiest week of the season, playing four games in a matter of five nights this past week. The end results of that busy week started off well for the Indians with a 68-52 home win over Spring Grove, MN Monday, January 26, but got progressively worse, as the Tribe fell at New Hampton Tuesday, January 27, 54-48, suffered a 58-49 home loss to MFL/MarMac Thursday, January 29 in a game rescheduled from earlier in the month, and then surrendered a 52-31 loss at home to Class 3A sixth-rated Crestwood after playing the highly-regarded Cadettes to just a two-point halftime deficit.

Waukon wrestling team finishes seventh at Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament

The Waukon wrestling team competed in its final event prior to postseason tournament competition Saturday, January 31 at the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament hosted by New Hampton High School. The Indians had wrestlers competing in just nine of the possible 14 weight classes, with a couple of those weight classes missing their regular wrestlers. The end result was just a pair of fourth-place finishes headlining the mat Tribe’s individual placewinnings on the way to 65 team points and a seventh-place team finish. The Indians will now prepare for postseason tournament competition at their Class 2A Sectional Tournament being hosted by North Fayette Valley in West Union this Saturday, February 7.

For the first time this season, the Waukon boys basketball team lost consecutive games within the same week, battling through a pair of losses this past week against Northeast Iowa Conference opponents. The Indians were dealt an 80-53 loss at home by Class 2A top-five rated New Hampton Tuesday, January 27 before having the tables turned on them from a previous match-up against Crestwood, suffering a 57-46 loss at the home of the Cadets Friday, January 30.

Waukon wrestling team falls in final home duals, finishes third at Riceville Tourney


The Waukon wrestling senior pair of Gunnar Grangaard (pictured above) at 152 pounds and Adam Benzing at 145 pounds wrapped up the final home dual meet of their high school wrestling careers in victorious fashion, book-ending the Indians’ 52-20 home loss to Oelwein Thursday, January 22 with half of the four Indian wins in the dual. Grangaard opened the dual getting a leg up on Oelwein junior Alexander Hepperle before pinning him in a time of 2:22 and Benzing’s result was right on the nose as he finished off the dual with a 10-0 major decision over Oelwein junior Elliott Phillips. The Waukon wrestling team brought its regular season to a close this past week, completing its dual meet season with a pair of losses before wrestling to a third-place finish at the Riceville Tournament. The wrestling Tribe fell to both Class 3A 10th-rated Waverly-Shell Rock, 56-18, and Oelwein, 52-20, in its final dual meet event of the regular season Thursday, January 22 before claiming five individual runner-up finishes on the way to finishing third in the eight-team Riceville Tournament Saturday, January 24.
The Indians finished the regular season with an overall record of 7-17, 0-6 in the Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC). They will now prepare for the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament to be held at New Hampton Saturday, January 31 before opening postseason tournament competition at their Class 2A Sectional Tournament being hosted by North Fayette Valley in West Union Saturday, February 7.

Waukon boys basketball team wins OT thriller at Charles City, falls to Decorah

The Waukon boys basketball team split its pair of Northeast Iowa Conference contests this past week, fighting back from late deficits in both games but only being able to finish off one of those comeback efforts. The Indians overcame a double-digit halftime deficit to pull out a 63-58 overtime victory at Charles City Tuesday, January 20 before having Decorah fend off another late Indian comeback effort to suffer a 71-60 loss at home to the Vikings Friday, January 23.
Currently holding a 9-5 overall record, 3-4 in the Northeast Iowa Conference, the Indians were slated to continue their Northeast Iowa Conference schedule this week with a Tuesday, January 27 home game against New Hampton before traveling to Crestwood Friday, January 30. The Tribe will then play host to Caledonia, MN Tuesday, February 3 and Oelwein Thursday, February 6.

Waukon basketball girls avenge loss to Decorah, just miss same feat against Charles City

The Waukon girls basketball team split a pair of Northeast Iowa Conference games this week, showing improvement by avenging one sizable early-season loss and nearly pulling off that feat twice. The Indians came up just shy of paying back an earlier 15-point loss to Charles City, but fell short, 47-42, in a home battle with the Comets Tuesday, January 20. The Tribe did, however, avenge an initial 33-point loss to Decorah by pulling out a 59-56 road win over the host Vikings Friday, January 23.

The Kee boys basketball team took part in one of its busiest weeks of the season this past week, but was able to finally bring to an end what had amounted to a 13-game losing streak. After adding to that streak with a 59-50 home loss to Turkey Valley Tuesday, January 20, the Hawks put forth one of their best offensive efforts of the season to snap that streak with a 62-58 home triumph over De Soto, WI. The Hawks then ended the week suffering a 69-46 loss at Coulee Christian High School in West Salem, WI.
Holding a 2-14 overall season record, 1-10 in the Upper Iowa Conference, the Hawks are slated to finish out their regular season at home, starting that final two-week stretch Tuesday, January 27 against Starmont and Friday, January 30 at West Central. Kee will then host North Fayette Valley Tuesday, February 3 and Clayton Ridge Friday, February 6 before wrapping up the regular season schedule with a Tuesday, February 10 home date with Seneca, WI.

The Kee girls basketball team had just one game on its schedule this past week, a game the Lady Hawks had kept their eye on since mid-December, when Kee suffered what had been its only loss of the season, 54-44, at Turkey Valley. Hoping to avenge that lone blemish on their season record when they hosted the Trojans Tuesday, January 20, the Lady Hawks suffered a second-half letdown in missing that mark and falling by a 61-37 result to the Class 1A 10th-rated Turkey Valley squad.
The Kee girls are scheduled to begin postseason tournament play Thursday, February 12 at home against Central Elkader at 7 p.m. and will host a second-round game as well Tuesday, February 17. Further details of the Hawks’ postseason journey will be published in a future edition of The Standard.
