Waukon High School to host free Financial Aid presentation April 2

Ninety percent of the fastest growing careers require additional education and training beyond a high school diploma. To prepare students and families for life decisions and planning beyond high school, the Waukon High School counseling office has invited a representative from the Iowa College Access Network (ICAN) to provide a free financial aid presentation Monday, April 2 at 6 p.m. in the Waukon High School library. The presentation is geared toward high school juniors and their parents.

Topics covered at the presentation will include:

• FAFSA Application Review
• Understanding FAFSA Results
• Understanding Costs - College Comparisons
• Financial Aid Options
• Scholarships Process
• Where to Go for Help.

Waukon Junior High and Sixth Grade Bands receive Superior ratings for 10th year in a row ...

The Junior High Band (pictured above) and the Sixth Grade Band (pictured below) from the Allamakee Community School District each earned Superior ratings at the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Association (NEIBA) Large Group Contest held Tuesday, March 13 at the Waukon High School gymnasium. This is the tenth consecutive year that both bands have earned the highest available rating at this contest. A total of nine middle school bands from throughout northeast Iowa participated in the annual event. Submitted photos.

Artwork featured on Artsonia.com ...

East Elementary School fifth grader Mercedes Wilkins of Waukon is currently being featured as Artsonia’s Artist of the Week for fourth-sixth grades. Some of her artwork, including the “Straw Weaving” project she is displaying in the above photo, will be featured on the Artsonia website, www.artsonia.com/museum/aotw/, during this week of March 25-31 after she received one of the top vote totals in the weekly contest. She will also receive a plaque and a $50 gift certificate from Blick art supplies, and the Allamakee Community School District elementary art program, under the direction of Carlyn Lechtenberg, receives a $100 art gift certificate as well. Film on country schools ...

Robey Memorial Library in Waukon will be hosting a film about country schools and the “days gone by” in educating youth in Iowa and the Midwest Tuesday, April 24 at 7 p.m. The film “Country School: One room, one nation” is being presented by the Allamakee County Historical Preservation Commission. Supervisors discuss pair of items regarding recent drone purchase, approve easements on County property for next year’s sidewalk/street project

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, March 26 to address a full agenda of items, including the consideration of temporary easements for the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) Sidewalk Improvement Project, consideration of bids for a County Sheriff’s Department 2013 Dodge Charger and the purchase of a search and rescue drone for training purposes.

Dr. David Kieffer

Dr. David A. Kieffer, 63, of Broomfield, CO, with courage and resolve, went home to God Saturday, March 17, 2018. He was continuously surrounded by his family and loved ones; he has never been alone. Services were held Friday, March 23 in Broomfield, CO.

Born in Dearborn, MI to parents Bob and Iris Kieffer, David attended parochial school throughout high school. He attended Hope College in Holland, MI, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He then attended Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, MI, where he received his Master ’s degree in Psychology and an additional degree in Psychological Services. In 1996, he completed his Doctor of Psychology degree at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO.

Devin Tielbar

Devin Joseph Tielbar, 18, of Farmersburg passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2018. Funeral services were held Monday, March 26 at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg, with the Rev. Harold McMillin officiating. Burial followed in Farmersburg-Wagner Cemetery, Farmersburg.

Devin was born August 30, 1999 to Lyndean and Mary Beth (Howe) Tielbar in Waukon. He was a senior at MFL/MarMac High School in Monona. After graduation, Devin planned on working at Pattison Sand Mine. He liked working with his hands and excelled at wood and shop classes in school. In his spare time, Devin enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad and his friends, playing video games and milking cows for Don and Randy Wagner. He was proud of his Dodge truck and was a Dallas Cowboys fan.

Eugene Knox

Eugene R. Knox, 77, of Waukon died Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, WI. Memorial services were held Tuesday, March 27 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial with military graveside rites was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Eugene Raymond Knox was born January 22, 1941 in Burr Oak, the son of Thomas and Frances (Wicks) Knox. When Gene was young, he lived with his uncle and aunt, Ted and Edna Larson, while his father was in the service. He attended St. Patrick Catholic School in Waukon and served in the U.S. Marines with two tours in Vietnam.

Donna Brubaker

Donna Lou Brubaker, 85, of Cedar Rapids died peacefully Saturday, March 24, 2018. A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, March 29 at Cedar Memorial in Cedar Rapids. Funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, March 30 at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Burial will be in South English Cemetery following the funeral service.

Donna was born August 20, 1932 in Waukon. She was the first of three children of Oliver and Ida Teslow. Donna grew up on multiple farms in northeast Iowa with her siblings, Ramona (Monnie) Brazell of Cedar Rapids and Dean Teslow of Decorah. She graduated from Waterville High School in 1950 and married Dale Kolsrud  in 1951.

Thomas Mooney

Thomas “Tom” Michael Mooney, 82, of Marion, formerly of Waukon, passed peacefully Wednesday, March 14, 2018. A Funeral Mass was held Monday, March 26 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion by Father Mark Kwenin. A private committal service will take place at a later date. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion assisted the family.

Tom was born July 1, 1935 in Harpers Ferry, the son of Harold and Helen (Schwartzhoff) Mooney. After growing up on the family farm near Harpers Ferry, Tom enlisted in the United States Air Force in April of 1957. August 22, 1957, Tom and his love, Carole Ann Connor, were united in marriage.
