The Kee volleyball team brought its regular season to a close this past week, wrapping up its final week of regular competition against Upper Iowa Conference foes in both dual match and tournament play. The Hawks won two of a total of five matches played in that final week, first falling to South Winneshiek at home Thursday, October 12 in their final dual match of the regular season, 24-26, 24-26 and 20-25. Kee then split its four matches played at the annual Upper Iowa Conference Tournament Saturday, October 14, falling to both Starmont, 10-21 and 20-22, and Central Elkader, 11-21, 21-19 and 8-15, but also picking up a pair of wins, over Turkey Valley by scores of 21-17, 16-21 and 15-9 and over MFL/MarMac by scores of 21-7, 16-21 and 15-13.

The Kee football team brought its home schedule for the 2017 season to a close with a non-district contest against Northwood-Kensett from Eight-Player District 2 Friday, October 13. A steady rain that had fallen throughout most of Friday made for some less than ideal field conditions that helped limit the Hawks to just 159 yards of total offense in falling to the visiting Vikings by a 14-6 final result.

“It was tough for either team to get much going,” Kee football coach Chad Winters said. “With all the rain, the field got torn up pretty quickly.”

Mary Lou Meyer, 89, of West Union died Thursday, October 12, 2017 at her home in West Union. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union, with Rev. Don Komboh and Rev. Dale Rausch as the celebrants. Interment will be held in the West Union Cemetery following the burial mass.

Mary Lou, the daughter of Otto and Alice (Hayes) Kubitz, was born July 16, 1928 in Houston County, MN. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Albin and graduated from New Albin High School in 1945.

Mary Lou was united in marriage with Ferris Meyer October 30, 1947. Ten children were born to this union. In addition to raising her kids, Mary Lou worked at the Humphrey Café and Traeger’s Jack and Jill in West Union. She worked at the registration desk for Palmer Lutheran Clinic and, after her retirement, in medical records at Palmer for 29 years.

James Carleton Sodey, 68, of Lansing, formerly of Fort Madison, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 21 at the Fort Madison United Methodist Church with Rev. Lane Van officiating.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday, October 20, with the family to receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday evening at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory in Fort Madison. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the City of Fort Madison’s Marina or P.A.W. Animal Shelter.

James was born March 25, 1949 in Ottumwa to Dr. Albert and Mrs. Charlotte Sodey. He married Angela McKenna September 5, 1970 in Ottumwa.

Joe A’Hearn, age 77, of Waukon, formerly of Las Vegas, NV, died Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society - Waukon. Funeral service will be held Saturday, October 21 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be at the church for one hour before the funeral.

Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.

Joe was born September 4, 1940 in Waukon to Norbert and Thresa A’Hearn. He attended St. Patrick School, graduating in 1958. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963-1966.

Joe worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Las Vegas, NV from 1968 to 2005, when he retired. Joe was an avid golfer and enjoyed visiting old friends on his summer vacations in Iowa.

Elaine M. Bahr, 90, of Waukon died Tuesday, October 10, 2017 surrounded by her family at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Friday, October 13 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Elaine Marie Bahr was born April 9, 1927 in New Albin, the daughter of Donald and Mary (Rouster) Thomson. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin and graduated from New Albin High School. August 13, 1946, she married Donald Bahr in Waukon. They farmed together in Ludlow Township for many years.

Her motto was faith, family and friends; she was a devoted farmwife, mother and grandmother. Elaine loved spending time with her family; they would have big meals on Sundays and she always took food out to the guys while they were in the field and would make sure they had enough to eat.

James “Jim” Roy Burrett, age 71, of St. Cloud, MN died Monday, October 9, 2017 at the Veterans Affairs Hospice Center in St. Cloud, MN following a yearlong battle with lung cancer. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, October 14 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sauk Rapids, MN, where Rev. Ralph Zimmerman officiated, and burial was held Monday, October 16 at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls, MN. Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in Sauk Rapids, MN assisted the family with arrangements.

Jim was born August 15, 1946 to Robert and Andree (Tatro) Burrett in West Union. He graduated from Waukon High School in 1965. Jim proudly served his country with the United States Army from 1965-1967, serving 14 months in Vietnam.

This year’s annual Healthiest State Initiative Walk was held October 4 across the state of Iowa. Community and staff members participated in the local Allamakee County event hosted by Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. The Healthiest State office believes walking is one of the best ways to stay healthy and also one of the best ways to connect with others, so they encourage everyone to walk for 30 minutes every day, and not just on the annual walk. Early detection can prove to be lifesaving when it comes to detecting and fighting breast cancer. There are four important ways to play a crucial part in finding breast cancer early on, which could significantly increase one’s chances of recovery should one be diagnosed with the disease.

1. Perform a monthly breast self-exam (BSE.) Because 65 to 70 percent of all breast cancers are found by women themselves, there’s no substitute for doing a BSE. Examine the breasts the week following a menstrual period for anyone age 20 and over. For women who are no longer menstruating, they should perform a BSE the first day of every month.
