The Waukon baseball team played the spectrum this week, ending its regular season with four final losses this past week before beginning postseason tournament play with a victory. That final four-game slide began with a pair of mercy-rule losses at Class 2A top-rated New Hampton by scores of 11-1 and 13-3, both in five innings, Monday, July 3. That trend continued at Crestwood Wednesday, July 5 with a 9-2 loss before the Tribe’s regular season came to a close with a 13-7 defeat at home against South Winneshiek Thursday, July 6 in a rescheduled championship game from the Jeff Houg Tournament that was rained out from June 24. Completion of the regular season gave way to a first-round Indian victory, 8-3, at home Saturday, July 8 over Starmont in the first round of Class 2A District Tournament play.

The Kee baseball team brought its regular season to a close with a split in each of its two final dates on the playing schedule. The Hawks opened their final week of the regular season with a split of a home doubleheader with Maquoketa Valley Monday, July 3, posting a 5-1 victory in game one before suffering a 1-0 defeat in the nightcap. Those splitting ways continued in Kee’s final regular season date played at Luther College in Decorah Thursday, July 6, the Hawks defeating Riceville by a 14-4 result in six innings before falling to West Fork by a final score of 7-2.

The Waukon softball team had its season brought to a close in the opening round of Class 3A Regional Tournament play Wednesday, July 5, taking on a familiar foe in fellow Northeast Iowa Conference squad New Hampton. The Indians had fallen to the Chickasaws in all three previous games they played this season, but to varying degrees. Wednesday’s postseason match-up played out to just about all of those same degrees on the way to a 17-5 Indian loss in six innings.

The loss ends the Indians’ season with an overall record of 7-25 that includes a 3-15 mark to end up sixth in the final Northeast Iowa Conference standings. New Hampton went on to fall to seventh-rated Center Point-Urbana Friday, July 7 by a 10-5 final result.

One might expect the top-rated team in the state to play to a sweep of its regional tournament opponents and earn a berth in the State Tournament, but the Kee softball team did so in dominating fashion in its three Class 1A Region 5 match-ups, all played at home for the second consecutive season. The Class 1A number-one rated Hawks played to three consecutive regional tournament victories for the third time in the past four seasons, this year outscoring those three opponents by a 33-0 final margin and outhitting those teams by a 29-3 count, the Hawks not allowing those three hits until their final regional tournament game.

Dr. Lisa M. Schreiber passed away July 4, 2017 in Lancaster, PA at the age of 49. A Celebration of Life gathering will be announced at a later date.

Dr. Schreiber was an associate professor in the Communications and Theater Department at Millersville University. Her advanced degrees were obtained from the University of Oklahoma and the University of Nebraska. One of her contributions to her field of study was a free on-line communications text book entitled, “The Public Speaking Project.” It is used free of charge by students and faculty around the world.

Dr. Schreiber is survived by her two sons, Dylan Roeder and Nathan Roeder of Lancaster, PA; her father, Thomas (Caroll) Schreiber of Lansing; her mother, Nancy (Tom) Grandinetti of Moline, IL; her brother, Derek Schreiber of Roswell, GA; and her grandparents, William and Ruth Schreiber of Streator, IL.

Vivian M. Iverson, 88, of rural Waterville died Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 15 at 11 a.m. at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 14 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Vivian Mildred Iverson was born December 10, 1928 in Clayton County, the daughter of Irving Theodore and Rita Elizabeth (Lestina) Hartong. She graduated as valedictorian from Waterville High School. In April of 1950, Vivian met Earl Howard Iverson at a saddle club ride; December 31 that same year they married at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville. Vivian and Earl farmed together and she was in charge of the dairy and responsible for milking the cows.

Deanna Lynn Auer, 64, of Waukon, formerly of Postville and Ossian, died Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, July 10 at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Postville. Rev. Nils de Jesus Hernandez was the Celebrant. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Postville Cemetery, Postville.

Deanna was born September 4, 1952 in Dubuque to Ralph and Ruth (Hayes) Auer. She graduated from Postville High School with the Class of 1971. Following high school, Deanna graduated from Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) with her LPN Nursing Degree and later also graduated from NICC with her RN Advanced Nursing Degree.

Deloris M. Topel, 80, of Waukon died Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 18 at 1 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be at Old East Paint Creek Cemetery, rural Waterville. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Deloris Mae Topel was born April 16, 1937 in Waterloo, the daughter of Lois Thompson. She lived with her adopted parents, George and Ethel (Mattie) Malli, in Decorah and attended Decorah area schools. Deloris worked at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon as a nurse's aide.

Ronald Stockdale, age 83, of University Place, WA died Friday, June 30, 2017 after several months of hospitalization due to complications following hernia surgery. Generous and caring, he was dearly loved by family and friends.

A celebration of his life in a memorial service will be held Saturday, July 22 at 1 p.m. at University Place Presbyterian Church, 8101 27th Street West in University Place, WA. Remembrances can be made to the General Fund at the ARK Institute of Learning.

Born in Aplington April 28, 1934, he was the youngest child of C.R. and Mildred Stockdale. His twin brothers, Robert and Eugene, preceded him in death while his sister, Marilyn, survives. Ron’s warm memories of childhood included working with his father on the family farm, excelling at sports - especially as a pitcher in baseball - and hunting pheasants with his cousin.

The Kee softball team defeated Calamus-Wheatland Monday, July 10 in their Class 1A Region 5 championship game by a score of 11-0 to finish off another three-game regional sweep and earn a chance to defend the Class 1A State Tournament Championship the Hawks won last season. This year's return trip marks the fourth State Softball Tournament qualification for the Hawks, and the third in the last four seasons. Continuing its reign as the number-one rated team in Class 1A and earning this year's State Tournament top seed, Kee will now begin its Class 1A title defense Monday, July 17 with an 11 a.m. first-round game against Montezuma at Harlan Rogers Park in Fort Dodge.
