Nyles and Ruby Herman of Waukon will be celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary this week. Nyles Herman and Ruby Beardmore were married June 1, 1952 at Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church in rural New Albin.
They have four children, Brad (Judy) Herman, Brent Herman, Brian (Michelle) Herman and Kim (Ron) Winters. They also have 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
The couple farmed the Herman Century Farm, where a fifth generation grandson now lives, and will be celebrating 41 years as owners of the Waukon Feed Ranch this summer.

Cliff and Charlotte (Hansmeier) Christianson of Waukon are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. They were married June 4, 1957 at Salem Reformed Church in Ludlow.
They have two children, Gary Christianson of Maple Wood, MN and Tammy Belverud of Decorah. They also have eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one step-great-granddaughter.

Shayne and Chelsey Clark of Monona announce the birth of their daughter, Phoenix Rose Clark, born May 16, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 6 lbs. 15.2 ozs. and measured 20 inches in length at the time of her birth. She joins a sister, Shelby Lynn Clark (4).
Grandparents are DuWayne and Rochelle Fabert of Luana, Rebekah Clark of Dubuque and Lewis Clark of Dubuque. Lorrie Beisker of Monona is a great-grandparent.
Dan Crary and Tuesday Hansen of Waukon announce the birth of their daughter, Kenlee Grace Crary, born May 16, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 7 lbs. 8 ozs. and measured 22 inches in length at the time of her birth. She joins siblings, Pierce (7) and Emma (4).
Grandparents are Barb Crary of Waukon and Tammy Hansen of Decorah.
Shannon Alber and Cassie Bakke of West Union announce the birth of their son, Caymen Scott Alber, born May 19, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 6 lbs. 12 ozs. and measured 20-1/2 inches in length at the time of his birth. He joins a brother, Nolan Bakke (11).
Grandparents are Jeff and LuAnn Alber of West Union, Ron and Julie Peiffer of Harpers Ferry and Kevin Bakke of Waukon. Great-grandparents are Lydia Murphy of West Union, Don and Joyce Bakke of Waukon and Sharon Brown of Waukon.
Benjamin Kolbeck and Marissa Kruse of Luana announce the birth of their son, Aven Ray Kolbeck, born May 17, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 6 lbs. 11 ozs. and measured 20 inches in length at the time of his birth. He joins brothers, Xander, Renik and Aleck Martinez.
Grandparents are Kent and Christine Kruse of Postville and Brenda and Michael Kolbeck of Birchwood, WI. Great-grandparents are Jim and Diane Kruse of Decorah, Guadalupe Oliverez of Corpus Christi, TX and Sharon and Duane Kolbeck.
The Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital recently awarded Jacob Dougherty of Waukon a $500 college scholarship as he furthers his education in paramedic studies at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) in Peosta. He is the son of Dave and Brenda Dougherty and is a 2017 graduate of Waukon High School. He has already achieved his Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license and is an active EMT on the hospital’s service. Community blood drive scheduled for June 12 in Waukon
The next LifeServe Blood Center blood drive will be held Monday, June 12 from 12-5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church located in south Waukon. Blood drives are held once a month in Waukon to allow for more donors to give. The LifeServe Blood Center supplies Veterans Memorial Hospital with its blood and blood products.
Blood centers across the United States see a decrease in blood donations during the busy summer months. During the summer, people are more active, have busier schedules, spend more time outdoors and take vacations.
While donations decline, hospitals see an increase in the need for blood. More driving can mean more automobile accidents. A person who has suffered severe injuries from an automobile accident can need up to 50 units of blood.
The Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation’s 24th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament will be held Monday, June 19 at the Waukon Golf and Country Club beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
Teams of three will play 18 holes of golf. Breakfast rolls, lunch, dinner and prizes for everyone will all be provided for the donation of $75.
This is the 24th annual golf tournament the Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation has sponsored. All those interested are asked to pre-register their team by calling the Waukon Golf and Country Club at 563-568-9939. There are a few spots remaining for teams to join.
The Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation is a volunteer board that raises funds to help promote health care in the area communities served by Veterans Memorial Hospital.
