Artwork by area elementary school students has been on display at the Keystone Area Education Agency (AEA) office in Elkader throughout this past school year, with three local students having their work selected as a “featured artwork” piece. Such a selection means the artwork will be on display at the Keystone AEA office all summer and also on the Keystone AEA website for all to view. The Allamakee Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) sponsored the 40th annual Conservation Education Day Thursday, May 4 in the Waukon City Park. An estimated 88 sixthgraders from Waukon Middle School and St. Patrick School in Waukon attended the event. The weather was great and the morning was filled with many fun activities, many of which are pictured in the surrounding photos.
Russ Hagen, Allamakee SWCD volunteer, taught a canoeing station with assistance from Kerry Troendle and Jeremy Leitz from the Allamakee County Farm Service Agency office. The students learned how to get in and out of a canoe safely and enjoyed floating on the Indian Springs Pond. The students had fun and no one fell in.
Tyler O'Neill (center), Waukon High School graduating senior and son of Joe and Michelle O'Neill of Waukon, was recognized by Iowa Governor Terry Branstad (right) and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds (left) for outstanding academic achievement at the 15th Annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony held April 30 at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines. The statewide program, sponsored by the Iowa Governor’s Office, Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and its title sponsor, the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF), honored 429 high school seniors from throughout Iowa at this year's ceremony. “Iowa Farm Bureau members know that by investing in our youth and communities, we’re investing in the future of Iowa,” said IFBF President Craig Hill. “We have been honored to be a title sponsor of the Annual Governor's Scholar Recognition Ceremony for the past 15 years to celebrate Iowa's exceptional high school students.
Dave Schoeberlein, Social Studies teacher at Waukon High School was recently recognized by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate for organizing Waukon High School's and Waukon Middle School's participation in the statewide Iowa Youth Straw Poll for the 2016 general election. Seventh through 12th grade students voted on their choice of the 2016 general election candidates and the results were then totaled with results from other Iowa schools and reported on Secretary of State Pate's website at https://sos.iowa.gov/youth/poll/results.aspx.
Christa Heffern, a 2017 graduate of Waukon High School, was recently presented the school's highest agricultural honor, the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award, sponsored by Monsanto Company. The daughter of Jack and Cindy Heffern of Harpers Ferry, she received the award for excellence in academics, leadership and agricultural work experience.
Heffern's significant experiences and accomplishments have included earning her Iowa FFA Degree, being a member of the Waukon High School Little Switzerland FFA Chapter Meats Evaluation Reserve Champion Team, and serving as Chapter Reporter and President. Jessica O'Connor is Heffern's agricultural education instructor at Waukon High School.
This year, the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award celebrates its 70th anniversary. Over these 70 years more than 168,000 high school seniors from across the country have received the award, which has become a symbol for excellence and the school's highest agricultural honor.
June 15 program will feature presentation on Captain Andrew Talcott and surveying of the Iowa-Minnesota border in 1852
Don Borcherding of Rochester, MN will be reenacting surveyor Captain Andrew Talcott (1797-1883) at the June 15 session of the Sesquicentennial programming being held at Meehan Memorial Lansing Public Library throughout this year. Captain Talcott surveyed the Iowa-Minnesota boarder in 1852.
In his reenactment as Captain Talcott, Borcherding will be answering the following questions:
District Director Jayne Armstrong of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Iowa District Office is reminding Iowa small businesses of the June 6 deadline to apply for an SBA federal disaster loan for economic injury caused by severe weather and flash flooding in Winneshiek County that occurred August 23-24, 2016.
According to Armstrong, small non-farm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of any size may apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loans of up to $2 million to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. “Economic Injury Disaster Loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that cannot be paid because of the disaster’s impact. Economic injury assistance is available regardless of whether the applicant suffered any property damage,” Armstrong said.
Repairs being made June 5-9 will impact local travel, as well as water quality and availability
In a letter from Mayor Josh Dreps, residents of the City of New Albin were advised that Monday, June 5 through Friday, June 9 the City of New Albin will be performing sewer main line repairs and replacing two main water valves at the intersection of Highway 26 and Ross Avenue. The letter advised residents on street closures as well as alerts in both water quality and availability at times during the weeklong project.
The letter stated both lanes of traffic on Highway 26 will be closed during excavation and repairs, and that the City of New Albin has been working with the Department of Transportation in preparing for the Highway 26 closure to provide detoured routes around the project.
The Waukon baseball team opened its 2017 season with mixed results against a trio of teams from the Upper Iowa Conference. The baseball Tribe kicked off the season with a 4-1 victory at North Fayette Valley Tuesday, May 23 before falling at home to South Winneshiek, 8-0, Thursday, May 25 and again at Clayton Ridge Friday, May 26 by a 5-3 count.
The Indians were scheduled for a busy early part of the week this week, originally slated to host a varsity doubleheader with Waverly-Shell Rock to open its Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) season Tuesday, May 30 before playing at MFL/MarMac Wednesday, May 31. That May 30 home date will have to be played at Waverly, as a water pipe in the Indians’ field watering system requires repair before the field will be playable again. The Tribe will then play another NEIC double-dip at Charles City Tuesday, June 6 before hosting Turkey Valley Wednesday, June 7 and playing at Decorah Friday, June 9.

The Waukon softball team got its 2017 season off to a winless start, although the Indians were leading when one game ended. That Tuesday, May 23 season opener at home against Central Elkader had the Indians holding a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning when the game was called due to rainy conditions and is not scheduled to be completed. Following that wash-out, the Indians’ luck didn’t change for the better, being swept at home by Waverly-Shell Rock, 12-0 in five innings and 7-4, in their Northeast Iowa Conference opener Thursday, May 25 before suffering a similar fate, 11-0 in five innings, at home to Class 1A top-rated and defending State Champion Kee Friday, May 26.
