Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Waukon Center held its “Build Your Own Business” Summer Camp June 21-22 for students entering fourth through sixth grades this fall. This two-day camp was a “Shark Tank”-style experience (based on the “Shark Tank” television series) where students learned basic business concepts and vocabulary in formulating a business idea, created their own business plan, discussed customer service and created their own logo and business cards, printed by The Copy Shoppe. Students listened to presentations from local businesses and also visited Silver Laine Co., Cunningham Hardware, Town Theater, Aztec Parlor and Paws Up Pet Supplies in downtown Waukon to witness what they learned at the camp being utilized in a real business setting. The students concluded camp by presenting their business ideas to area business leaders who represented the “sharks” that provided feedback on those business ideas.
After high school graduation, students will face many new experiences beyond academics and social situations. Iowa Student Loan (ISL) Education Lending knows that preparation for the next step helps students increase their chances of graduation, finding a job and successfully repaying any student loans. ISL offers the following tips for parents on how to help prepare their students, and themselves, for life away at college:
1. Plan for medical emergencies. Parents may not have access to health information or be able to make medical decisions for incapacitated students who are 18 or older, no matter who carries the insurance and pays the bills. Parents may want to have their student properly complete, sign and have notarized official medical power of attorney and medical information release forms that can easily be accessed in case of emergency. In addition, students should understand when to self-treat, visit a clinic or specialist, or go to the emergency room.
A free online college planning tool that helps families estimate the total cost of a college education has been redesigned to make it simpler to use.
The College Funding Forecaster allows students to input estimated costs, expected financial aid, savings and earnings to project total out-of-pocket expenses and potential student loan amounts for four to six years, the time it typically takes to earn an undergraduate degree, at the college or university of their choice.
Iowa Student Loan (ISL) Liquidity Corporation, a nonprofit organization which offers college financing products as Iowa Student Loan Education Lending, provides the mobile friendly College Funding Forecaster free on its website at www.IowaStudentLoan.org/Forecaster.
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is the all-volunteer uniformed civilian component of the United States Coast Guard. Established by Congress in 1939, the Auxiliary assists the Coast Guard in all activities except military and law enforcement duties.
In the Upper Mississippi River area these duties mainly include boater safety training, assisting boaters in distress, search and rescue operations and vessel safety exams, but many more opportunities exist.
There are some 22,000 volunteer auxiliarists nationwide. The operative word is “volunteer”. The Auxiliary cannot provide these lifesaving duties without ample volunteers. Volunteers require training and certification to perform their duties and meet U.S. Coast Guard standards.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Wednesday, July 13 Chautauqua Program at the Ferryville Village Hall in Ferryville, WI has been canceled. Organizers regret the cancellation and hope to rebook the speaker for the 2023 Summer Series. Assistance in spreading the word would be appreciated.
The third program of this year’s series is scheduled for August 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ferryville Village Hall. Madison, WI residents Tim and Linda Eisele will be speaking on Native Species Planting.
The City of Prairie du Chien, WI’s Park and Recreation Department, the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are partnering up for “Family Fishing Fun Nights”. This four-week event will be held each Tuesday in July, from 5-6:30 p.m., at the Washington Street Park in Prairie du Chien, WI. Poles, bait and fishing assistance will be provided, if needed.
Participants will have the opportunity to become an official Junior Ranger Angler by completing a few fun activities in the “Let’s Go Fishing” activity booklet and returning it to a participating park, wildlife refuge, or hatchery. Take the official pledge and receive a wooden Junior Angler badge.

The Waukon baseball team both wrapped up its regular season and began its postseason with victories that came in narrow fashion, the Indians closing out their regular season with a 14-16 overall season record that includes a mark of 7-13 that placed the baseball Tribe fifth in the six-team final Northeast Iowa Conference standings. That final week of the regular season saw the Indians first play to a split at home against Charles City Monday, June 27, winning game one by a 5-4 count before falling in game two by a 6-5 final result in nine innings. The Waukon diamond dwellers then wrapped up their 2022 regular season with a 6-4 home win over MFL/MarMac Wednesday, June 29 before getting their postseason journey underway with an 11-9 win over Clayton Ridge/Central in their Class 2A District 4 Tournament opener Saturday, July 2 at Monona.

Softball Hawks advance on to play at and against Central City Wednesday night
An undefeated past week saw the Kee softball team wrap up its regular season with championship flair and also begin its postseason in a triumphant manner. Having the fate of a second consecutive Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) championship season in their own hands, the Lady Hawks took full advantage of that opportunity with sweeps of a pair of home UIC doubleheaders, locking them in a second consecutive sharing of the Upper Iowa Conference season championship with Turkey Valley, as both squads compiled a 14-2 UIC record for this season’s honors.

The Waukon softball team brought its regular season to a close with one of its best weekly results of this season, posting three wins in its four games scheduled this past week. The diamond Tribe ended up splitting a home doubleheader with Northeast Iowa Conference-leading Charles City, first handing the Comets an 8-7 defeat Tuesday, June 28 before having to postpone the second half of that twinbill to Thursday, June 30 due to stormy weather, a postponement that ended up being an 8-3 Indian loss. In between those two Charles City results, the softball Tribe witnessed and helped create history for sophomore pitcher Cameron Johnson, as she threw a perfect game in a 12-0 Indian victory at home over MFL/MarMac Wednesday, June 29. The Waukon girls wrapped up their week, and their regular season, with a 12-6 victory at Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, July 1.
District tournament play scheduled to begin Tuesday at home vs. Dunkerton
A four-game schedule with just a single loss would be welcome by most high school baseball teams, but the lone defeat the Kee baseball team suffered during this final week of the regular season brought an end to a 20-game win streak for the Hawks and denied them an undefeated Upper Iowa Conference season. Still, Kee’s diamond dwellers wrapped up a regular season overall record of 34-3 and a 17-1 mark that secured sole possession of the Upper Iowa Conference season championship.
