North Central Iowa Research Farm to hold June Field Day

Field day planned for June 16 in Kanawha

Tar spot, recent analysis of the corn nitrogen rate calculator and a review of current growing season issues will highlight the summer field day of the Iowa State University Northern Research and Demonstration Farm.

The field day will take place June 16 at the farm’s southern location, one mile south of the main farm on R35 or 1040 James Ave. Registration and refreshments will begin at 9 a.m. and the field day will start at 9:30 a.m. Certified Crop Adviser credits will be available. Lunch will be served at noon and the field day will conclude by 1 p.m.

Matt Schnabel, farm superintendent, will begin the day with a season review of the farm activities, followed by Greg Guenther, North Central Iowa Research Association president, with an update on the on-going capital campaign.

Voters will head to the polls June 7 for 2022 Primary Election

Tuesday, June 7 will be the Primary Election to determine which candidates will be representing their respective political parties in the 2022 General Election in November. A Public Notice of Election listing all candidates on this year’s Primary Election ballot for the respective races in each of the Republican and Democratic parties was published on Page 24 in the May 25 issue of this newspaper, listing races at the Federal, State and County levels of government for voters to make their selections in, along with additional ballot and election information, including the polling location times opening at 7 a.m. and closing at 8 p.m. for all 10 polling sites that June 7 Primary Election day. The actual sample election ballots may now be viewed at the Allamakee County election website: https://allamakeecountyelections.iowa.gov/.

Allamakee County Veterans Museum dedicated ...

After two years of planning, organizing and preparation, the Allamakee County Veterans Museum was dedicated and opened Saturday, May 28 in a brief ceremony held at the new museum housed in the former Vet’s Club on Allamakee Street in Waukon, with many in attendance at the outdoor ceremony and for the first viewing open to the general public, as evident in The Standard photos above and below by Joe Moses. Following the Pledge of Allegiance to kick off the ceremony, Allamakee County Historical Society Board of Directors President George Beardmore noted he was honored to have the flag raising for the dedication event take place on the flag pole dedicated in honor of his father, Glenn Beardmore, and former Waukon Mayor Robert White, both of whom were WWII Veterans. He also thanked U.S. Air Force Lt. Col.

Allamakee County Farm Bureau donates to Building New Traditions Campaign at Allamakee County Fairgrounds ...

Allamakee County Farm Bureau recently donated $10,000 to the Building New Traditions Campaign at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon. The Building New Traditions Campaign is dedicated toward constructing a new, larger all-species youth livestock show barn centrally located at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds, a project that also involves relocation, elimination and transformation of some of the other livestock buildings at the Fairgrounds, with that project well underway and expected to be completed this summer. Dairy Days Parade scheduled for June 6 in Lansing

The Allamakee County Dairy Promotion Board has scheduled the June Dairy Days Parade in Lansing this year. The parade will be held Monday, June 6, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Line-up for parade entries begins at 7 p.m. at Kee High School. The parade route will then travel up 6th Street from the high school to its main Main Street stretch, then east to the 2nd Street four-way stop, and then south to Center Street, where it will venture back west to the high school.

The Allamakee County Dairy Promotion Board  will be setting up its dairy wagon at the parking lot of Kerndt Brothers Bank on Main Street and serving from 4-8:30 p.m.

Lansing RAGBRAI Committee looking for volunteers and vendors to welcome those who “Pedal to Paradise” in July

Vendor applications due June 8; Volunteer public forum June 15

RAGBRAI is coming to northeast Iowa in late July this year, and as the final tire-dip destination for the annual bike ride, Lansing will be needing a large number of volunteers for a variety of services. The volunteer experience offers the opportunity to meet people from all over the world who have traveled 453 miles across Iowa on their “Pedal to Paradise”.

Volunteers can choose to help for a morning, an afternoon or any allotted time that works for them from July 22-30. It’s ultimately up to the volunteer and their schedule.

Swartz Law Firm, PLLC welcomes new attorney

Swartz Law Firm, PLLC, of Waukon has announced that Luke Meinholz has joined its staff as a new associate attorney. Meinholz graduated from Creighton University School of Law in Omaha, NE in August 2021.

Meinholz hails from the Madison, WI area. He graduated from Marshall High School in 2008, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Arts degrees in History and in Zoology in 2012. Meinholz began his law studies at Creighton in August 2019, and graduated cum laude in only two years.

While in law school he received CALI awards for academic performance, was active in numerous organizations and competition teams - including serving as President of Creighton’s Military Law Society, and earned recognition for his pro bono service from the Nebraska Supreme Court. He also worked as a legal intern for Great Plains Communications in Blair, NE.

4-H Toppers annual Easter Egg Hunt also benefits Allamakee County Food Shelf ...

The 4-H Toppers 4-H Club hosted its Annual Waterville Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 16 at the Waterville Community Center. Attendees were asked to bring non-perishable food items to participate in the annual event. Collectively, 90 pounds of non-perishable food items were collected (as pictured above with the club) and recently donated by the 4-H Toppers to the Allamakee Community Food Shelf. The 4-H Toppers were recipients of a 2021 Waterville Community Foundation Grant which helped support the Annual Easter Egg this year. Meyer honored among KWWL Best of Class 2022 for Kee

Valedictorians or top graduating seniors were honored by KWWL Television and the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) in a ceremony held Saturday, May 21. The students took part in KWWL’s 38th annual “Best of the Class” celebration on the University of Northern Iowa campus in Cedar Falls.

Haley Meyer from Kee High School was selected as a member of the 2022 Best of the Class. Best of the Class students able to attend were videotaped on the UNI campus for a series of public service announcements, which are scheduled to air on KWWL’s Channel 7 during the month of June.

Awarded Hammel-Zoll Scholarship

Daniel Wagner, a 2022 graduate of Kee High School in Lansing, was awarded the $2,000 Hammel-Zoll Scholarship for the Holy Family of the Bluffs Catholic Community at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing this year. Wagner is the son of Andy Wagner and Erica Krause-Wagner of Lansing, and he plans to attend Iowa State University in Ames this fall to pursue a career in Mechanical Engineering.
