Waukon softball team secures first win of the season, 3-2 over South Winneshiek, in four-game week shortened by weather


First varsity homerun is part of three-hit night ... For the second consecutive week, the Waukon softball team had its schedule shortened by Mother Nature, as the Indians had the Saturday, June 4 North Fayette Valley Tournament canceled by rainy weather. Prior to that washed out weekend, the diamond Tribe played four other games, putting one of those in the win column for the first Indian victory of the season. A Tuesday, May 31 Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) doubleheader at Crestwood resulted in losses of 6-0 and 8-5 before back-to-back home games ended up in a split, including a 14-9 loss to Decorah Thursday, June 2 followed by a 3-2 win column ice-breaker over South Winneshiek Friday, June 3.

Kee baseball team suffers lone loss during six-game week of competition in rematch of top-10 Class 1A squads from State Tournament quarterfinals

The Kee baseball team played another busy slate of six games during the holiday-shortened past week, putting five of those six games in the win column to currently hold a 13-2 season record that includes an undefeated mark in seven Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) games. Three of those UIC wins led off this week, including a home doubleheader sweep of 15-0 and 17-2 in four innings each over Postville Tuesday, May 31 and an 11-1 home win over North Fayette Valley in six innings Thursday, June 2. The Hawks then traveled to Eddyville-Blakesburg for a weekend trio of games, falling to fellow Class 1A top-10 rated New London by a 10-0 result in six innings Friday, June 3 before sweeping two games in tournament play Saturday, June 4, 8-5 over the host school and 13-2 in five innings over Pekin.

Waukon baseball team’s two wins in five games include split at Decorah, 6-4 win at Sumner-Fred prior to sweep at Charles City

The Waukon baseball team recorded two wins in its five games played this past week, with four of those games being played in the Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC). That week began with a split at Decorah Tuesday, May 31 that included a 14-3 win and 7-6 loss in nine innings before the Indians recorded a 6-4 win at Sumner-Fredericksburg Thursday, June 2. The week wrapped up with sweeping losses in a doubleheader at Charles City Friday, June 3 by scores of 11-4 and 8-7 to leave the Indians with a 3-6 overall record and 1-5 mark in NEIC play.

Alice Johnson

Alice Johnson, 102, formerly of Waukon, died Sunday, June 5, 2022 at Kavanaugh House in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 10 at 11 a.m. at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating and burial at the church cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 9 at Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church.

Alice Beatrice Olvina Ford Johnson was born February 6, 1920 on the rural Waukon farm of her parents, Andrew and Minnie (Vangen) Ford. When she was young, her family spoke a lot of Norwegian around the house and Alice remained proud of that heritage all her life. She was baptized at the Pontoppidan Lutheran Church. Alice and her family moved into Waukon when she was quite young, where she attended Waukon schools.

Howard Sorum

Howard John Sorum, 83, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Atkins, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at The Gardens of Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, June 9 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Norway. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 10 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, with Fr. Ken Glaser presiding. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, with full military rites.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association. Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids are in charge of arrangements.

Howard was born June 30, 1938 in Waukon, the son of Julius and Martha (Halverson) Sorum. He graduated from Waukon High School.  Howard served in the United States Navy for four years. He was united in marriage to Judith “Judy” Urell April 18, 1964 in Waukon.

Bernard "B" Dougherty

Bernard “B” John Dougherty, 88, of New Albin passed away at Thornton Manor Saturday, May 28, 2022. Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, June 3 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Albin with Rev. Sean Smith as the Celebrant. Burial followed at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in New Albin.

Bernard was born July 3, 1933 at his parents’ home in rural Waukon. He was the son of Johnnie and Anna (Haas) Dougherty. He attended a rural country school and then graduated from Waukon High School in 1952.

Bernard served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. October 21, 1958 he married Carol M. Byrnes of Lansing at Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing. Bernard and Carol lived in Waukon for a short time period before moving to New Albin where they made their home and raised their family.

Eric Hinkel

Eric Hinkel, age 51, of Waukon passed away peacefully Thursday, May 26 following a lengthy illness. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, June 26 at The Barn restaurant in Prairie du Chien, WI from 1-4 p.m.

He resided in Colorado for many years and was a cook and server at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado, where he had the honor of meeting some of his beloved Denver Bronco football players such as John Elway, Keith Bishop and Steve Watson.

He later moved to Waukon to be closer to family. He continued in the restaurant business until his health declined. He loved watching football and spending time with family.

He is survived by his mother, Kymm (Pfeiffer) Hinkel; his sisters, Sarah (Drew) Hager and Brooke (Steve) Weighner; and his nieces and nephews, Kylee, Jaden and Noah Hager, and Gabriel, Isaac, Elijah, Laila and Jeremiah Weighner, all of Waukon.

Noel Protsman

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Noel Lee Protsman, 90, of Lansing May 29, 2022 at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home in Waukon. At her request, no service will be held.

Noel was preceded in death by her parents, William and Frances Early; her husband, Lawrence (Dutch) Protsman; her son, Stephen Protsman; and her daughter, Lisa (Protsman) Batteen.

Noel is survived by her son, David Protsman; her son-in-law, Tom Batteen; her daughter-in-law, Kathleen (Curran) Protsman; and her eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and their families.

Noel was born December 31, 1931 in Columbus, OH to William and Frances Early. She lived in California from an early age to her teenage years. She married Lawrence (Dutch) Protsman June 3, 1948 in Biloxi, MS at Kessler Air Force Base. They settled in Lansing in 1954 where they raised their three children.

Louie (Bob) Hanson

Louie Robert (Bob) Hanson was born to Lewis and Jessie Hanson May 19, 1933 in Waukon and met his Savior and Lord May 17, 2022 in Prescott, AZ. Internment will be at Prescott National Cemetery with full military honors. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. July 1 at the Cemetery Pavilion in Prescott, AZ.

Bob graduated from Waukon High School in 1951. In 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Carol Schlake. He worked with his father as a carpenter until he enlisted in the Air Force in 1953. This was the beginning of a very exciting journey that would last over 23 years as they served and lived in many states and three foreign countries. They were stationed in Spain and England, each for three years. Bob also served one year in Vietnam.

Three children were born to this union: son, Ricky, in Cheyenne, WY; son, Mark, in Madrid, Spain; and daughter, Diane, in Chicopee Falls, MA. One infant son, Jeffery, preceded him in death.

Train derailment spills coal into river south of Lansing

A Canadian Pacific train derailed about 6:40 a.m. Wednesday south of Lansing, spilling coal into the Mississippi River. Ten coal cars derailed, but only one tipped coal into the river (as pictured below in The Standard Newspaper photo by Julie Berg-Raymond). An unknown amount of coal spilled about 4 miles south of Lansing, just south of the Lansing power plant. No fuel or other products were spilled. Staff from Canadian Pacific Railroad continue to work on the derailment. Iowa DNR staff will monitor clean-up activities and consider appropriate enforcement action.
