The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, October 4 to address a full agenda of items.
During Public Comment, former council member John Ellingson discussed the former McCabe property and the development agreement between Steve Pladsen and the City of Waukon as being a positive for the community from a residential and commercial perspective. Ellingson advised that planning related to the Bresnahan property continue with this being an excellent location for residential development.
Mayor Pat Stone read aloud the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Buddy Poppies Proclamation and encouraged all citizens to support this fundraising effort benefiting veterans in need and disabled veterans October 15, 2021. Stone encouraged residents to wear Buddy Poppies in honor of the men and women who have risked their lives in the defense of this nation’s freedoms.
One hundred twenty-three youth from 70 counties participated in the 2021 Awardrobe Clothing Event held at the Iowa State Fair. Elizabeth Fossum (pictured at right), daughter of Kevin and Julie Fossum of Waterville, represented Allamakee County 4-H in the Clothing Selection Awardrobe Event. She is a Senior member of the Elon PMC 4-H Club.
This event provides 4-H members in grades 9-12 the opportunity to showcase their apparel design and production knowledge, as well as creativity skills. As a part of the showcasing experience, youth complete a comprehensive report and participate in conference judging. The event concludes with a runway show for all participants.
Saturday, September 25, the Waukon High School Marching Band performed the pre-game and halftime shows at Warburg College in Waverly. This is the third time in the past five years that the band has had the honor to perform at a home football game for the college. The game featured the Wartburg Knights hosting the Coe College Kohawks, both of which have several Waukon football alumni listed on their respective rosters this season. The band will continue to perform at halftime for the remaining home games for the Waukon High School football team, as well as perform at the Iowa High School Music Association (IHSMA) State Marching Band Festival this Saturday, October 9. The Board of Directors of the Eastern Allamakee Community School District (EACSD) held its regular meeting at Kee High School in Lansing Monday, September 20, the first meeting held after the start of the new school year. Board member Kelli Mudderman was not present.
After some additions to the agenda, the board adopted the agenda and the meeting proceeded with the usual authorizations for the September consent items, minutes of the regular August meeting, bills for September, Secretary’s Financial Report for August, Student Activity and Food Service August Reports.
Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Business and Community Solutions is offering “Mini STEAM Camp K-5th” Wednesday, October 20 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the NICC Waukon Center, 1220 3rd Ave NW.
Keep kids engaged on the off-school day by signing them up for a mini-STEAM camp. Kindergarten through fifth grade students will be doing Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math activities. Snacks and supplies are provided. Camp hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and campers should bring a sack lunch.

Long-time Lansing dentist Bruce Carlson, who retired last year, is throwing a party - and everyone is invited.
As a way of saying “thank you” for 42 years of patronage - “I’m thanking the community for kind of putting up with me,” he says - Carlson is hosting “Celebrate Lansing” this Saturday, October 9, from 1-6 p.m., at the Lansing Sports Complex. There is no admission charge for the event, which includes live music (Freaks of Nature performs at 1 p.m., followed by Joe and Vicki Price) and on-site food vendors. Attendees are invited to bring their own beverages; all alcohol must stay within the Sports Complex fence.

Carlson says he fell in love with this area the first time he drove into Lansing, in 1977.
Allamakee County residents who use, or are planning to use, childcare - specifically in Lansing and New Albin - are being asked to complete a survey aimed at investigating childcare needs in the county.
By request of Allamakee Economic Development Executive Director Val Reinke, notes containing a link to the online survey will be sent out with residential water bills this month, Lansing City Clerk Katie Becker announced Monday evening, October 4 during the regular meeting of the Lansing City Council.
Martha Dunlevy Peters, a native of Lansing, has recently published a book, “Extracting Wisdom”. This book is about supporting a culture of excellence in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is infused with wisdom from young, seasoned and retired surgeons. All dental and medical teams will benefit from the messages of compassionate patient care and leadership. The author also shares her own story as an oral surgery patient and as a seasoned surgical assistant, providing a unique perspective from both sides of the dental chair. It’s a good thing Waukon Indian football coach Chad Beermann does not award game balls to deserving players as there would not have been enough for everyone Friday, October 1 after his team beat visiting Dubuque Wahlert, 64-21. The Indians amassed over 700 yards of offense including 406 yards on the ground and 296 yards in the passing game. Those 64 points were the most scored by the grid Tribe since a 66-0 victory over Anamosa in 2019 as Waukon improved to 5-1 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in District play.
“The offensive line did a great job of blocking,” said the Indian head coach. “And then Wahlert really struggled in tackling our backs in the open field. Pat (Hennessy) and Lincoln (Snitker) really carried the load with each accounting for over 240 yards of offense apiece.”
Lopsided wins are always welcome for a coach but can also leave them wondering how their team will react in a tight game that might come down to the final possession. Having outscored five previous opponents by a 280-47 result so far this season, Kee football head coach Chad Winters found out a lot about his team Friday night, October 1 after a wild 46-38 victory at Edgwood-Colesburg (Ed-Co), keeping the Hawks undefeated with a 6-0 record.
“For the fans, it was a heck of a football game to watch as there were some great athletes on both teams that made some big-time plays,” said Coach Winters. “It was a nightmare start as we fumbled on our first play from scrimmage and it was returned for a touchdown. We also fumbled the exchange on our next possession and were trailing, 12-0, before we knew what hit us. Give credit to our kids as they kept their cool and battled back.”
