      The Lady Hawks basketball team went up against the Postville Pirates last Thursday, Jan. 20. Unfortunately, the Pirates turned out to be too much for the Hawks to handle, as the Lady Hawks were defeated, 48-52.
      The Hawks started the game off slowly, and consequently, the Pirates took the lead in the first quarter, and by halftime they were ahead by 16 points. Postville dominated the boards during the first half because the Hawks struggled with the height difference. Postville had two girls that were over six feet tall.

The autumn 2004 issue of the THE WILSON QUARTERLY leads with the topic "Politics as War."
      "Poitics as War" writes the Quarterly's staff reflects their conclusion American politics is too partisan for the good of the country. Whether this is true or not, what might be a way to mitigate this perceived undue partisanship? An answer has been nurtured by the Friends of the Upper Mississippi River Refuge Complex. It is bipartisanship!

      The Kee High boys basketball team endured a rough game against South Winneshiek last Tuesday, Jan 18 and received their fourth defeat of the season. The final score was 41-80 in favor of South Winn.
      The Hawks came out flat. They lacked their usual energy and hustle. South Winn took advantage of Kee's seemingly dead spirit and outscored the Hawks by 17 points in the first quarter alone. The first quarter was an accurate preface of what lay ahead.

      Somehow, we managed to get through those ice days without too many injuries, etc. I am so glad that enough snow came to cover it so I can go to the mailbox and use wood from the wood shed.
      I read in somebody's obituary that they had been married at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, IA. In 1940, there were 1549 marriages performed, these compared to 243 marriages in 2004. This goes to show, we still had a depression upon us when very few couples could afford the huge, fancy wedding of these days.

      ATTENTION: We are trying to locate the 2 large (2 ft by 4 ft) pictures that were purchased from the Way Station on Thursday, Dec. 23. They were not for sale and we would like to buy them back.       The movie playing at the Way Station Theater on Friday, January 28th at 7 pm and Saturday, January 29 at 1 pm will be "Swiss Family Robinson". Remember, the movie is free, doors open 15 minutes before showtime and concessions are sold during the movie.

      The constituents of the Eastern Allamakee Community School District have bragging rights on the schools 2003/2004 test results. The state of Iowa has just released the results of the 2003/2004 testing program for all of the schools in the state of Iowa. Student achievement scores in mathematics and reading at the fourth and eighth grade levels were released on a district-district basis. The results show the percentage of students that are proficient in these two areas in fourth and eighth grades.

The Duroc breed of pigs was started in Saratoga County, New York, by Isaac Frink who lived near Milton, NY. He secured his first hogs in 1823 from Harry Kelsey, who had moved to Florida, Montgomery County, New York, in 1822. Mr. Kelsey was standing the famous Thorough-bred stallion Duroc, and Mr. Frink visited the Kelsey farm to see the horse. While at the Kelsey homestead he spied some red pigs that very much took his fancy, and he purchased some of them and took them home. Since the pigs had no breed name, he called them Durocs in honor of the stallion. Mr.
