The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors - Monday, February 14 regular meeting

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors moved quickly through a handful of items on the agenda at its Monday, February 14 regular meeting.
Items not listed on the agenda that were briefly discussed were the demonstration of new voting equipment, to be held in Winneshiek County, and an update on the insurance questions raised at last week's meeting.
A public hearing was set for 10 a.m. Monday, March 7 for the FY06 budget.

Seventh annual Dollars for Scholars Phone-athon will get underway next week

The seventh annual Allamakee Dollars for Scholars Phone-athon will begin the last week of February from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, and will also be conducted February 24 and March 1. This event is the major fundraiser for the organization and is conducted by the student applicants in conjunction with the Dollars for Scholars board.
Students will be calling from phone banks at Waukon High School, Waukon State Bank and Farmers and Merchants Bank, all in Waukon; Waterville Elementary School in Waterville; and American Express Financial Advisers-Arne Beneke in Caledonia, MN.

Nicole Oden receives RN certification

Nicole M. Oden of Waukon has received notice that she has successfully completed all the requirements and Board exams, and has achieved the right to practice as a Registered Nurse.
Oden attended Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) in Calmar and received her Associate Degree in Nursing in December of 2004. She plans to continue her education at NICC and earn her Bachelor's Degree within the next two years.

Corps of Engineers provides navigation statistics for 2004 season for Lock and Dam 9

Exactly 6,336 vessels and 13,256,894 tons of cargo passed through Lock and Dam 9, located near Lynxville, WI, during the 2004 navigation season from March 15-Dec. 6. The MV Coral Dawn was the last tow to pass through at 3:44 a.m., Dec. 6.

Camp Tahigwa should be included in every girl's "thoughts of summer" Summer camp registration begins this week

Snow is melting and summer is approaching. Adults are planning vacation time and kids are planning trips to the swimming pool and looking for the summer camp they would like to attend. Wouldn't it be great if there was a camp right here in Northeast Iowa that could boast beautiful meadows, wooded areas, a rippling stream and modern facilities that would offer many opportunities for fun and adventure?

East Elementary, St. Patrick's among schools competing at Keystone's Invention Convention

This year the 18th Annual Keystone Area Education Agency (AEA) Invention Convention will be held at two sites, at Johnson's Restaurant in Elkader for the northern school districts Tuesday, Feb. 22 and at Table Mound Elementary School in Dubuque for the southern school districts Thursday, Feb. 24.

Benefit event Feb. 19 for house fire victims

A benefit event for Gerry and Janette Blong and Betty Ryder, who lost their home and belongings in a January 21 house fire, is being planned for Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon.
A meal will be served from 3 to 7 p.m., with a silent auction taking place from 3 to 9 p.m. A bake sale will also be held throughout the afternoon of the event. A dance DJ'd by Tom Frascht will take place from 7 to 11 p.m..

Keith Schroeder, Mission Trip group to speak at Feb. 21 and 24 Lenten breakfasts at St. John's

The tradition of weekly ecumenical Lenten Breakfasts continues next week at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. The breakfasts begin at 6:45 a.m., serving coffee, juice and rolls, with the program starting at 7 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend each week.
The men gather each Monday during the Lenten season and the women meet each Thursday for the breakfast events. Locations will be rotated between area churches each week, according to the remaining following schedule:
February 21 and 24 = St. John's Lutheran
February 28 and March 3 - First Presbyterian
