Waukon Police Department to host Tobacco Compliance Training

Sound the bell because school's back in session for tobacco retailers. Area clerks will go back to school to receive state training on the "ABC's" of selling tobacco products.
In coordination with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division (ABD), the Waukon Police Department will teach a tobacco compliance training class Thursday, March 3 from 12 to 2 p.m. Training will be held at the Robey Memorial Library located at 401 First Avenue NW in Waukon. Registration is exclusively available via the Iowa ABD's web site at www.IowaABD.com.

Two miles of Mississippi River bluffland near Lansing protected by conservation agreement

A voluntary land preservation agreement has permanently protected 150 acres of bluffland along a two-mile stretch of the Mississippi River.

Question & answer session on meth set for February 22 in Waukon

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a question and answer session about the methamphetamine problem that has made itself all too well known in this area. The session will be held Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 12 Noon at the Main Feature Theater and Pizza Pub in Waukon.
The Waukon Police Department, the Allamakee County Sheriff Department, and Allamakee Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) will be available to answer questions those in attendance may have in regard to methamphetamine. The general public is invited to attend this session.

Terrell Baumler receives visit from Make-A-Wish Foundation as he battles cancer for a second time

Being a child, and raising that child, has its own set of challenges and rewards, but for five-year old Terrell Baumler and his parents, Jan and Kenny Baumler of Waukon, those challenges and rewards have been greatly magnified by not just one, but now two battles with cancer.

District Court offices will be closed Mon., Feb. 21

All Iowa District Court offices will be closed this coming Monday, Feb. 21 as part of measures taken after the Iowa Supreme Court approved a $5 million budget reduction in July of last year.
State offices (including clerk of courts, juvenile court services, and court administration) will be closed and no regularly-scheduled court hearings will be held, with the exception of initial appearances or emergency hearings.
Additional closing dates will be March 25, April 22 and May 27.

Disabled American Veterans meeting in Decorah Feb. 16
The Disabled American Veterans Hamre-Giesen Chapter #8 holds monthly meetings at the All Vets Club in Decorah, beginning at 11 a.m. The meeting for February will be held Wednesday, Feb. 16.
Attending meetings will give disabled veterans and their families updates on available benefits. Anyone wishing to attend the meetings but unable to secure transportation may contact Commander Erik Nykannen at (563)535-5430 or erikn@acegroup.cc.

Athlete of the Week

Ryan has enjoyed success during his first year with the varsity basketball squad and Indian fans have enjoyed his efforts during the recent week of action. Last Tuesday, Feb. 8, the sophomore forward led the Indians to a 49-32 win over Oelwein, boasting a career-high 19 points and adding three assists, two steals, and a block in the win. Last Friday, Feb. 11, Ryan's efforts were just as vital as the Tribe upset eighth-rated Waverly-Shell Rock 56-54. Ryan hit the game-winning three-pointer with just five seconds left to seal the win for his team.

Last chance to get state finals wrestling tickets
Tickets for the 2005 state wrestling championships will be available at the Waukon Senior High office through this Friday, Feb. 18. Tickets are $7 each. Orders will only be accepted with payment. Tickets will be distributed at the Saturday, Feb. 19 district tournament or can be picked up at the high school office beginning Monday, Feb. 21. All tickets sales are final.
