Brian and Brittany Rosenthal of Cambridge, WI announce the birth of their daughter, Lydia Anna Rosenthal, born September 27, 2017 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, WI. She weighed 6 lbs. 14 ozs. and measured 19 inches in length at the time of her birth. She joins a big brother, Owen (2).
Grandparents are Duane and Robin Martin of Cambridge, WI and Jerry and Terri Rosenthal of Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Great-grandparents are Carol and the late Lloyd Martin of Waukon, Don and Millie Noyce of Oregon, WI and Jerry Nystrom of Wisconsin Rapids, WI.

Birth announcement: Donlon

Mark and Amanda Donlon of Monona announce the birth of their daughter, Remi Jo Donlon, born October 12, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 7 lbs. 13.8 ozs. and measured 20-1/2 inches in length at the time of her birth. She joins a sibling, Case (20 months).

Grandparents are Rodney and Doreen Bries of Monona, Dan and Maryann Donlon of Postville, and Sonny and Patty Handke of West Union. Great-grandparents are Elmer and Teresa Bries of Monona.

Kami and Kyle Bruenning of Waukon announce the birth of their son, Tate Bruenning, born October 12, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 7 lbs. 10 ozs. and measured 21 inches in length at the time of his birth. He joins a brother, Bentley (3).

Grandparents are Vickie Kriener of Waukon, Steve Kriener of Waterloo, Tracy and Bob Kubitz of Rossville, and Scott and Betty Haase.

Comments from community meeting regarding Black Hawk Bridge recently shared with Iowa Department of Transportation


Area residents provide input on Black Hawk Bridge ... More than 70 people attended the September 12 community meeting hosted by Main Street Lansing at T.J. Hunters Banquet Hall in Lansing to discuss and provide their thoughts on the future of the Black Hawk Bridge in Lansing. The meeting was spurred by an initial meeting in August where the Iowa Department of Transportation presented proposed plans for future replacement options for the Black Hawk Bridge. Comments from the September 12 meeting were gathered and collated by the Upper Explorerland Regional Commission and then recently made public and shared with the Iowa Department of Transportation and Main Street Lansing. Sentiments ran high at the September 12 community meeting regarding the Black Hawk Bridge in Lansing. The meeting, sponsored by Main Street Lansing and moderated by Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission (UERPC), offered local residents an opportunity to voice their opinions in a small group format on the future of the Black Hawk Bridge.

The Iowa Department of Transformation (DOT) had presented information about a variety of options to replace the bridge in a public meeting on August 8 and asked for public input. The purpose of the September 12 meeting was to give citizens an opportunity to discuss the future of the bridge with their neighbors.

Supervisors approve bids for County Farm land, proclaim this week as Red Ribbon Week


Proclamation observes Red Ribbon Week ... With National Red Ribbon Week being observed October 23-31 to raise awareness of drug and alcohol abuse prevention, the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors signed its own proclamation at its Monday, October 23 regular meeting. The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, October 23 to address a full agenda of items, including a Red Ribbon Week Proclamation, the discussion and consideration of bids for the County Farm cropland and pasture land, and the review and approval of pay requests for the Public Safety Center.

During Public Comment, Ric Zarwell with the Allamakee County Protectors organization discussed the transportation of frac sand through neighboring counties in Minnesota and that the rail spur near the Upper Iowa River may be pursued for this transportation purpose. Zarwell stated that Allamakee County has a strict frac sand ordinance, which is a positive, and that the transportation and shipping of frac sand represents several transportation safety issues.

New Albin Savings Bank is 2017 Cloy Kuhse Positive Impact Award winner ...

The Allamakee County Economic Development (ACED) Board of Directors announced New Albin Savings Bank as the 2017 Cloy Kuhse Positive Impact Award winner at the ACED Annual Meeting hosted in New Albin Thursday, October 19. The annual award was created to highlight and recognize a business that is making a positive impact in Allamakee County, as well as to honor the memory of Cloy Kuhse and his vision. The nomination referred to New Albin Savings Bank as the “heartbeat of the community” with other comments being listed such as “a sprinkle of personalization, a family, shows support with involvement, genuinely cares for the community, a corporate citizen, and empowers others to help develop northeast Iowa into a wonderful place to live and call home.”

Electrical fire displaces apartment residents...

Wednesday, October 18 at approximately 4:49 p.m., the Waukon Area Fire Protection District was dispatched to 11 Third Avenue NW in Waukon, location of the more locally known "Beehive" apartment complex, where a fire was reported in the attic of the residential building. The fire was quickly extinguished before the building suffered any significant damage, but a report from Waukon fire officials indicate that the fire was electrical in nature and that the building sustained moderate damage and forced residents of nine apartments in the complex out of their place of residence. Waukon Area Fire Protection District crews were on scene for approximately three hours and received assistance from the Waukon Police Department and the Veterans Memorial Hospital Ambulance Service. Official trick-or-treat times set for Halloween; Local organizations offering safe, fun opportunities

The City of Waukon has set its official Trick-or-Treat time for Tuesday, October 31 from 4-8 p.m. Area residents are asked to leave porch lights on to welcome trick-or-treaters,  and the youngsters are reminded to keep safety in mind while making their rounds from house to house.

TASC, Inc.
TASC, Inc. will be offering open house trick-or-treating Tuesday, October 31 at its facility located at 2213 Mount Olivet Road NW, just off Highway 76 north of Waukon. Trick-or-treating will take place at TASC from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day.

Northgate Care Center
Northgate Care Center in Waukon will be offering open house trick-or-treating Halloween evening, Tuesday, October 31 from 4-6 p.m. Located at 960 Fourth Street NW in Waukon, Northgate Care Center residents and staff look forward to seeing the children dressed in their Halloween costumes and sharing the experience.

Candidate forum planned prior to upcoming City Election

Public invited to meet the candidates for Mayor and City Council October 30

The public is invited to meet the candidates at a nonpartisan forum Monday, October 30 at 7 p.m. in the Waukon High School Library. The forum will be sponsored by Waukon Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) and the Waukon High School government classes.

City of Waukon mayoral candidates planning to attend include Darryl Brink, Rick Herman, Dwight Jones, Pat Stone and Steve Wiedner. Council candidates include Ward No. 1 candidate Gayle Decker; Ward No. 3 candidates Arvid Hatlan, Don Steffens and Kevin Welsh; and at-large candidate Ben Rausch.

Candidates will each give a brief introduction of their backgrounds, qualifications and reasons for seeking office. Each will then respond to written questions from the audience which will be screened by a committee of the sponsors and asked by a moderator.

Driftless Area Education and Visitors Center to host 2017 Iowa Honeybee Queen Sunday

The Allamakee County Conservation Board invites everyone to learn about honey bees, honey and beekeeping at an interactive, informative program presented by 2017 Iowa Honey Queen Carly Vannoy Sunday, October 29 at the Driftless Area Education and Visitors Center in Lansing. The free public program will begin at 2 p.m, but the center will open its doors at 11 a.m. Participants will learn about how bees make mummies, the color of mystery honey, the strange use of beehives in medieval times and more.
