Veterans Memorial Hospital will be offering a course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for health care providers (those working in health-related fields such as physicians, nurses, EMTs, etc.) Monday, September 11, beginning at 5:30 p.m. This “Health Care Professional” CPR class will be held in the Large Conference Room located on the lower level of the hospital.

The cost of the class, for certification or recertification is the same and all registrants should bring along their own pocket mask. The card received with the course does certify attendants in CPR for two years.

The next local LifeServe Blood Center blood drive will be held Thursday, September 7 from 12-5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in south Waukon. Blood drives are held every month in Waukon, allowing for more donors to give. LifeServe Blood Center supplies Veterans Memorial Hospital with blood and blood products.

Anyone who lives to the age of 72 will have a 95% probability of needing blood or blood products at sometime in their life, so blood donors are greatly needed.

Regular blood donors may donate blood as often as every 56 days. First-time donors will find that donating blood is a safe and easy way to save lives and make a difference in the community. One single blood donation can save the lives of up to three sick or injured hospital patients. An average of 90% of first-time donors give at blood drives in their community, an opportunity for first-time donors to see how easy the donation process is.

The local Grief Support Group will hold its monthly meeting at Veterans Memorial Hospital Wednesday, September 13 at 2 p.m.

This informal meeting is open to anyone suffering from any type of loss, whether it be death, divorce, illness or some other grief.

Feel free to attend and bring a friend. This grief support group meets the second Wednesday of each month at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.
 

Lois and Nick Jones of Waukon, parents of the bride-to-be, and Susan and Roland Sutherland of Urbandale, parents of the groom-to-be, wish to announce the engagement and upcoming wedding of their children, Dana Jones, originally of Waukon, and Kasey Sutherland, originally of Knoxville. The wedding ceremony is scheduled for August 26 at The Barn in Prairie du Chien, WI.

The bride-to-be is a 2017 graduate of the University of Iowa with a Doctorate in Pharmacy degree and is employed at Mahaska Health Pharmacy in Oskaloosa.

The groom-to-be is a 2012 graduate of Iowa State University with a Bachelor degree in Marketing and is employed at Kelderman Manufacturing in Oskaloosa.

The couple will be spending their honeymoon in Jamaica and making their home in Montezuma.
 

Lorna Bjerke of Waukon will be celebrating her 90th birthday August 28. Plans are being made for a celebration with family.

Roger and Rita (Duffy) Byrnes of Waukon will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple was married September 2, 1967 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dorchester.

They are the parents of Lorne (Kari) of Moorhead, MN, Lyle of Waukon, Lewis (Janette) of Waukon, Ruth (John) of Spillville, Lee (Renee) of Cedar Rapids and Lonnie of Waukon. Their grandchildren include Payton, Ryder, Ethan and Keaton Byrnes, Cassidy, Gabriel and Garrison Byrnes, Mason and Payton Cox, and Grace and Oliver Byrnes.

A celebration hosted by their children is scheduled for Saturday, September 2 from 1-4 p.m. at the Waukon City Club Party Room.

Colbey and Craig Decker  of Green Bay, WI announce the birth of their son, Nicholas Michael Decker, born July 26, 2017 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Green Bay, WI. He weighed 6 lbs. 12 ozs. and measured 18-1/2 inches in length at the time of his birth. He joins brothers, Milan (5-1/2) and Noah (2-1/2).
Grandparents are Janelle Wiemerslage and Randy Peterson of Ferryville, WI, Craig and Amy Wiemerslage of New Albin, and Gayle and Carol Decker of Waukon. Vince Haas of Waukon is a great-grandparent.
