To the Editor:

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

“Indivisible, liberty, justice” can only be true when America is “one nation under God.” Without God is chaos and division. Just read and think on Genesis 1-4 to understand a lot. And compare 1 John 3:12, Jude 1:11, Hebrews 11:4 if you think Cain gets away with murder, even if he did build a great city.

Without God, man can not provide liberty and justice. God is the Originator of both liberty and justice, and a whole lot of other truth. God and the Holy Bible are “American values and ideals” greater than any I read in the Northeast Iowa Indivisible Chapter letter in the July 5, 2017 edition.

A program about Quilts of Valor was presented at the Allamakee County Fair Thursday, July 20 by area quilters. Allamakee County 4-H member Diana Davison reviewed her Quilts of Valor Citizenship 4-H project and Sue Lynch from Prairie du Chien, WI of the Northeast Iowa Quilters’ Guild shared quilts from the guild made for the Quilts of Valor presentations. Grace Murphy and Meg Schaller of Waukon showed a quilt made locally for presentation. At the end of the program, Quilts of Valor were awarded to Gene Scott and Dr. Alden Wiley, residents of Northgate Care Center. Additional Quilts of Valor created by Waukon quilters are being displayed in downtown Waukon in the Waukon Economic Development Corporation (former Tierney’s) building at the stoplight intersection. Verdon “Bud” Swenson, 92, of Postville died Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral Services were held Saturday, July 29 at Forest Mills United Methodist Church, rural Postville, with Rev. Kim Gates as the Officiant. Burial was at Minert Cemetery, Postville. Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville assisted the family with arrangements.

Verdon Marwin was born May 6, 1925 to Hall L. Jr. and Florence A (Lindroth) Swenson in Frankville Township. He attended Cherry Valley School and graduated from Luana Consolidated School and attended Seminary Courses at Wesleyan University, Garrett Evangelical Seminary and St. Paul School and received a degree in Theology.

Gregory “Hammer” J. Hamm, 61, of Waukon died Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Memorial services will be held Thursday, August 3 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, with Pastor Lynn Noel and Rev. Steve Brackett officiating. Burial will be at Waterville Lutheran Cemetery, Waterville. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 2 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon and one hour before services at the church Thursday.

Gregory James Hamm was born April 8, 1956 in Waukon, the son of Barton D. and Marilyn J. (Kolsrud) Hamm. He was baptized and confirmed at Waterville Lutheran Church in Waterville. Greg attended Waterville Elementary School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1974.

Veterans Memorial Hospital will be sponsoring their 24th annual 5K Cardiac Classic Run/Walk Saturday, August 19 in conjunction with the Waukon Corn Days celebration. This year, the event welcomes a shorter walking route with an optional 5K to offer distances that will please everyone of any age or ability that wishes to participate.

The event will begin and end at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon at 8 a.m. with registration beginning at 7 a.m.

This is a free wellness event for all ages. Anyone in the area communities is welcome to attend and enjoy a walk or run around the scenic city of Waukon. The first distance offered on the route is a 1.5 mile loop around the hospital campus and golf course.  Participants may choose to return to the hospital at that point, or go the entire distance of the 5K or 3.1 miles that will continue around the city streets of Waukon before returning to the hospital campus.

The local Grief Support Group will hold its monthly meeting at Veterans Memorial Hospital Wednesday, August 9 at 2 p.m. This informal meeting is open to anyone suffering from any type of loss whether it be death, divorce, illness or some other grief. Feel free to attend and bring a friend.

This grief support group meets the second Wednesday of each month at Veterans Memorial Hospital.
 

The Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital will be holding its monthly Euchre Marathon for all individuals of the community interested Thursday, August 17. Men and women are welcome to attend, even if not an Auxiliary member. The Euchre marathons are held the third Thursday of each month at the Senior Citizens Room at the Waukon Wellness Center.

The Auxiliary’s Euchre Marathons begin at 11:30 a.m. with dinner, if chosen. Call Northland Agency on Aging at 877-838-8077 if choosing to eat dinner. Card playing will follow at 12:30 p.m. until approximately 2:30 p.m. Anyone wishing to stay and play cards following the Senior Citizens meal is more than welcome to do so. The cost is $3 per person with all proceeds going towards the Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital. Prizes will be awarded.

Anyone interested in attending but preferring to play Bridge is also welcome to join in. It is asked that they come with their own table of  four players, however.

Veterans Memorial Hospital, in cooperation with the American Heart Association, is offering a course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation for lay people (those not working in healthcare), which includes child care providers, Monday, August 14, from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

The CPR class, which will cover adult, child and infant CPR, will be held in the Large Conference Room located on the lower level of the hospital. The cost of the class, for certification or recertification, is the same. The card received with the course does certify attendants in CPR for two years.

CPR is administered when someone’s breathing, pulse, or both, stop. When both of them stop, the victim has suffered sudden death, which can be caused by poisoning, drowning, choking, suffocation, electrocution, smoke inhalation, or the most common cause, heart attack.

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Diabetes Support Group will hold its next meeting Thursday, August 17 at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held at Veterans Memorial Hospital in the Large Conference Room, located on the lower level of the hospital in Waukon.
