Charlie Campbell

Charlie Daniel (Danny) Campbell, 85, of North Liberty passed away Thursday, May 19, 2022 at his home with his wife and grandson by his side. Funeral Services were held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville Tuesday, May 24. Military rites were conducted at the Ridgewood Cemetery following the services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Iowa City Hospice or Saint Thomas More Catholic Church of Coralville. To share a thought, memory or condolence, visit Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service website @ www.gayandciha.com.

IN HONOR OF THEIR SERVICE: Allamakee County Veterans Museum to open in time for Memorial Day Weekend in former Vets Club building

In the trenches and in honor of those who served ... The photos above and below depict scenes from combat trenches from various military conflicts throughout history that are on display at the soon-to-be-opened Allamakee County Veterans Museum in Waukon. In addition to those life-like displays, a number of other unique items can also be viewed at the museum, including a “Harley Davidson Goes to War” display viewable to the right in the photo above and the cage used to house prisoners of war viewable to the right in the photo below. Wide array of military uniforms and items on display ... Along with a variety of examples of the uniform attire worn by those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces, the soon-to-be-opened Allamakee County Veterans Museum in Waukon has a number of items on display from a variety of sources who shared their own military service experience with the new museum. One of the more unique items on display in the new Veterans Museum is a large ship’s wheel (seen toward the right in the photo above) that was donated in 2013 to the Allamakee County Courthouse Museum by retired U.S. Coast Guard Commander Charles Hinrichs, a 1943 graduate of Waukon High School. The former Allamakee County Courthouse on Allamakee Street in Waukon is a perfect setting for a museum; the building in itself has historic value and is housing pieces of area history that have their own significant value. Due to the efforts of a number of local history enthusiasts, this local attraction is now going to have a complementing venue of area interest ready to open in the coming weeks that will further enhance and continue the local historic perspective of this county and its residents who served their nation.

Innovative Ag Services/Land O’ Lakes donate to Building New Traditions Campaign at Allamakee County Fairgrounds ...

A donation of $18,000 was made to the Building New Traditions Campaign at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon through support from Innovative Ag Services and Land O’ Lakes. The Building New Traditions Campaign is dedicated toward constructing a new, larger all-species youth livestock show barn centrally located at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds, a project that also involves relocation, elimination and transformation of some of the other livestock buildings at the Fairgrounds. Ludlow Future Farmers 4-H Club donates to Building New Traditions Campaign ...

The Ludlow Future Farmers 4-H Club recently donated toward the Building New Traditions Campaign at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon. The 4-H club held a bake sale April 16 and raised $527.18 that was donated to the improvements campaign. Lansing RAGBRAI Committee looking for volunteers and vendors to welcome those who “Pedal to Paradise” in July

Vendor applications due June 8; Volunteer public forum June 15

RAGBRAI is coming to northeast Iowa in late July this year, and as the final tire-dip destination for the annual bike ride, Lansing will be needing a large number of volunteers for a variety of services. The volunteer experience offers the opportunity to meet people from all over the world who have traveled 453 miles across Iowa on their “Pedal to Paradise”.

Volunteers can choose to help for a morning, an afternoon or any allotted time that works for them from July 22-30. It’s ultimately up to the volunteer and their schedule.

Waukon High School Choir students perform at Large Group Contest in Osage ...

Saturday, May 7, the Waukon High School Band and Choir students performed at the Large Group Contest in Osage. The choir received a Division 1 rating, which is the highest level of achievement that can be obtained at contest. Three judges provided comments to and rated the group on a variety of musical aspects including tone quality, intonation, rhythm, balance and blend, technique, musicianship, diction, and other performances factors such as appearance, choice of music, poise, memory, and facial expressions.

Waukon P.E.O. Chapter EK announces recipients of prestigious P.E.O. STAR Scholarship and scholarship from local chapter


P.E.O. Chapter EK awards pair of scholarships to Waukon High School seniors ... P.E.O. Chapter EK of Waukon recently awarded a pair of Waukon High School graduating seniors each with a scholarship for their academic and extracurricular activity success, leadership qualities and community involvement. P.E.O. Chapter EK of Waukon recently awarded a pair of scholarships to Waukon High School graduating seniors. Madelyn Helgerson and Ella O’Neill were each honored with a scholarship for their academic and extracurricular activity success, leadership and community involvement.

“P.E.O Chapter EK of Waukon is very proud of these two girls and we wish them success in their future educational pursuits,” P.E.O. Chapter EK leaders expressed.

Madelyn Helgerson, a senior at Waukon High School, was selected to receive a $2,500 STAR Scholarship from the P.E.O. Sisterhood.  She was recommended by P.E.O. Chapter EK of Waukon.

Daughter of Waukon native graduates at the top of her class from UW-River Falls

Eryn Keenan ...

Eryn Catherine Keenan graduated summa cum laude from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Saturday, May 7, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. She double majored in Communication Studies and Psychology.

Keenan was also the recipient of the Seymour-Junkman Award, an honor bestowed upon the top graduating senior in the College of Arts and Sciences at UW-River Falls. That honor is based on grade point average (GPA) and overall academic performance.

She is the daughter of Jeff Keenan of Chaska, MN, formerly of Waukon, and Jessica Popp of Richfield, MN. She is the granddaughter of the late Lawrence and Maureen Keenan of Waukon.

Waukon City Council approves RAGBRAI Ordinance, hiring of additional police for RAGBRAI; Family Aquatic reportedly opening Tuesday after Memorial Day

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, May 16. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Pat Stone. Prior to approval of the consent agenda, council member Arvid Hatlan and Senior Project Manager Lyle TeKippe of Fehr Graham Engineering discussed a small asphalt area near the corner of First Avenue SW and Second Street that has yet to be repaired as part of the 2021 Street Improvement Project. Hatlan and TeKippe further discussed drainage issues to be addressed, with the Resolution accepting work covering the 2021 Street Improvement Project and the 2021 Street Improvement Project, Skyline Construction approval of Final Pay Estimate #7 consent agenda items both being moved to later in the meeting agenda to allow for discussion. The amended consent agenda was approved.

Waukon boys track team qualifies in eight events for State Meet


Qualifies in four events for State Meet ... Waukon boys track senior Braxton Stewart soars through the air on his way to one of his four second-place finishes and automatic qualifications for the Class 2A State Meet he earned at the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at Osage Thursday, May 12. Stewart landed at 21’0.5 for his long jump runner-up finish, cleared 6’4” to finish second in the high jump, and also finished second in the 400 meter hurdles in 57.29 seconds and in the 400 meter dash in 52.82 seconds, earning a full schedule at this year’s season grand finale. The Waukon boys track has extended its 2022 season in eight events following its final team competitions of the year within the past week-plus. Following a fourth-place finish at their Northeast Iowa Conference Meet hosted by Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday, May 5, the Indians secured a second-place team finish at their Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at Osage Thursday, May 12, despite not winning a single event. The track Tribe secured five automatic State Meet qualifications with runner-up event finishes at that meet, and then had four other third-place finishes earn at-large bids based on Class 2A performances statewide for a total of nine State Meet qualifications in eight different events.
