Waukon City Council accepts bids on storm water quality improvement project, approves pretreatment manual

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, May 2 to address a full agenda of items including the Public Hearing for the Proposed Contract Documents and Estimated Costs for the Storm Water Quality Improvements Project, discussion of an Industrial and Commercial Pretreatment Manual and discussion of the 7th Avenue SE and 4th Street SE Sidewalk Project.

There was no Public Comment and the meeting moved into Department Reports with Park, Recreation and Wellness Director Jeremy Strub providing an update. Strub discussed being in the second week of the youth soccer program and that water has been turned on in the City Park and campground. He added that water will be turned on at the swimming pool later this week with chemicals to be added as temperatures warm up.

Senior Awards Program at Waukon High School scheduled for May 17

Tuesday, May 17 at 7 p.m., the Senior Awards Program for the Class of 2022 will be held in the Waukon High School Auditorium. All students, parents and families, and community members are invited to attend.

Allamakee Scholarship Fund, Inc. and many community groups will present scholarship awards that evening. Honors and achievements by Waukon High School Class of 2022 members will be recognized.

EACSD Board of Directors approves graduation candidates, moving of 5th, 6th grades to Lansing

The regular monthly meeting of the Eastern Allamakee Community School District (EACSD) Board of Directors was held at the Kee Connect Building - the former Middle School - in Lansing Monday, April 18.  Board members present included Tony Becker, President Bobbie Goetzinger, Melanie Mauss, Kelli Mudderman and Arla Wagner.   Also present were Superintendent Dr. Dale Crozier, Kee High and Middle School Principal Dr. Sarah Updegraff, New Albin Elementary Principal Donna Thomas, and Board Secretary Michele Martin.

After the agenda was approved, the board authorized the April consent items, minutes of the March meeting, bills for April, Student Activity and Food Service March Reports.

IHCA Foundation offers variety of health care scholarships; Applications due May 31

The Iowa Health Care Association (IHCA) Foundation is offering 88 scholarships to help individuals interested in pursuing or advancing their career in long-term care. Scholarship opportunities are available for current long-term care employees seeking to advance their health care or leadership skills, as well as high school seniors, veterans or individuals residing in rural Iowa counties who are pursuing an education in health care.

Kee High School Post Prom winners...

Kee High School’s Post Prom was held Sunday, April 24 from midnight until 4 a.m. Guests played board games, Cash Cube, challenging and fun activities, Bingo and Euchre. Special entertainment was provided by hypnotist Mike Winters from Wand Entertainment, who also did several card tricks before his performance. Guests were given tickets to enter for prize package drawings and everyone won a prize according to their number assigned at registration. Before leaving, each guest drew a numbered chip to win the corresponding prize. A special drawing was also held and the Kee senior grand prize ($100 gift cards value) was won by Kylie Troendle (left in above photo).

Holy Hilarity Sunday hosted by Our Savior’s Lutheran Church ...

Worshipers at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lansing Sunday, April 24 were filled with laughter and joy as they celebrated the resurrection of Christ with their 16th annual Holy Hilarity Sunday. The children and youth of the congregation dramatically reenacted the Easter story, complete with angels dancing in giant wings. Spring Migration Day Hike set for May 7 in Ferryville

The annual Spring Migration Day Hike to celebrate the migrating birds returning to the Upper Mississippi Flyway region will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 7 at the trailhead for Sugar Creek Bluff Natural Area just off North Buck Creek Road in Ferryville, WI. The earlier starting time this year should enable the group to hear and spot more of the migrating warblers.

This is a relatively gradual hike of 1.5 miles round-trip. The halfway point provides an overlook of the Mississippi River. Expert birders will guide hikers in spotting the returning birds.  Ferryville Tourism Council is hosting this hike, with Mississippi Valley Conservancy presenting this event as part of its Linked to the Land series.

Waukon girls golf hosts double-dual, competes at Decorah Invitational

The Waukon girls golf program had a busy end to this past week, with back-to-back days of competition making up the Indian schedule for the week. This season’s lone team member, freshman Alyssa Connelly, first played host to both Charles City and a South Winneshiek team the program tried to host several weeks earlier in a Friday, April 29 home double-dual before competing in an 18-hole tournament at Oneota Golf and Country Club in Decorah Saturday, April 30.

The Indian girls golf program was next scheduled to host New Hampton Monday, May 2, but had that meet canceled so New Hampton could make up a previously postponed double-dual. Waukon will then host the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament Monday, May 9 before preparing for its Friday, May 13 Class 2A Sectional Tournament.

Waukon boys track team wins rescheduled Indian Relays

Having had its own Indian Relays canceled by weather last Thursday, April 21, the Waukon boys track team made a quick schedule change to join their female counterparts in hosting a co-ed Indian Relays Tuesday, April 26. That schedule adjustment ended up being the only competition for this past week for the Indians, but they certainly made the most of that opportunity by winning the team title by more than 100 points.

The Waukon boys are next slated to compete at the New Hampton Invitational Monday, May 2 before taking part in the Northeast Iowa Conference Meet at Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday, May 5. They will then prepare for their Class 2A State Qualifying Meet scheduled for Thursday, May 12 at Osage.

Kee girls track team finishes fourth at Clayton Ridge, eighth at MFL/MarMac

For a second consecutive week, the Kee girls track and field team was able to get its full schedule of outdoor competition completed, traveling to the homes of a couple fellow Upper Iowa Conference squads and finishing toward the middle of the pack at each invitational. The Lady Hawks placed fourth at the Clayton Ridge Invitational Tuesday, April 26 before finishing eighth at the MFL/MarMac Invitational Thursday, April 28 without the services of senior Haley Meyer, who was scheduled to compete among the state of Iowa elite in the 400 meter dash the next day, Friday, April 29, at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, and finished 13th among the state’s best 400 meter runners from all school sizes.

The Kee girls were next slated to compete in the Edgewood-Colesburg Invitational Monday, May 2 and then the Upper Iowa Conference Meet at Postville Thursday, May 5. They will then prepare for their Class 1A State Qualifying Meet scheduled for Thursday, May 12 at Edgewood-Colesburg.
