Allamakee County Board of Supervisors meeting Monday morning, April 18



The meeting of the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors was short-lived Monday morning, April 18 as the board members dealt expeditiously with the four agenda items.

Deb Winke, County Recorder, presented her quarterly report. Winke said that recording fees for documents was down by 18%; vital records were up 37%; and boat renewals and writing fees were very active. Over 1,100 boats were renewed in March.

Effigy Mounds to host special events this week during National Park Week, April 18-24

Special programs and hikes will be offered this week, April 18-24, at Effigy Mounds National Monument during the annual celebration of National Park Week, an annual observance proclaimed by the President of the United States as a time to celebrate and recognize national parks.

Therapeutic horseback riding program needs volunteers and horses

This spring begins the ninth season for Great Strides of Northeast Iowa, a non-profit organization for therapeutic and recreational horseback riding for the disabled, based in Decorah. Soon, enthusiastic volunteers will once again take their places helping with horses and riders of all ages. More volunteers are needed as sidewalkers and horseleaders.

Day use passes now available for all Corps of Engineer parks



The Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, recently obtained its 2005 annual Day Use Passes. Holders of these passes are allowed to use all boat launching ramps and swim beaches during 2005 without being charged day use fees at all 2,500 Corps of Engineers managed parks nationwide.

Fourth grade students to begin band participation process



It is that time of year when Allamakee Community School District fourth graders will be selecting their instruments to play. A letter and sign-up sheet for starting band were sent home with the district’s fourth grade students earlier this month. Mrs. Hardy also showed instruments to the students earlier this month and will be testing the students April 27-May 10 at East, Waterville, and St. Pat’s Elementary Schools.

Local teachers receive grant funding from Iowa Farm Bureau

Several teachers from Allamakee County received grant funding from the Iowa Farm Bureau teacher supplement program. Allamakee County teachers received a total of $2,010. The program provides much-needed resources to educate students about agriculture and food production.

The Iowa Farm Bureau is awarding a total of $50,000 to 292 teachers throughout Iowa. Since the program began in January 2003, nearly $140,000 has been awarded to 773 teachers.

UNI names 17 area students to Dean’s List



A collection of 17 area students are among those named to the Fall 2004 semester Dean's List at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Those students include:

Evan Schulte of Dorchester; Angela Lapel, Amber Regan and Laurie Wild of Lansing; Lindsay Anderson, Sarah Brainard, Nicholas Erickson, Jennifer Hemesath and Emily Larson of Postville; and Sara Byrnes, Karen Hall, Alicia Kelly, Sarah Kolsrud, Crystal Magner, Shannon Rumph, Vanessa Schulte and Benjamin Seibert of Waukon.

Kious receives UW-Platteville scholarship



Reed Kious, a senior at Waukon Senior High School, has been named a recipient of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Grace M. Johnson Scholarship. Kious, the son of Kirk and Linda Kious of rural Waterville, will be majoring in chemistry.
