Waukon wrestlers compete at Independence freestyle event

Four Waukon wrestlers placed in the top four in freestyle action at the Saturday, April 16 tournament in Independence.

A trio of Berns grapplers - Mason, Mitch, and Ryan - all scored runner-up finishes at the event. Nick Howe scored a fourth place standing.

Mitch Berns lost a 7-10 decision to Jason Mangrich of Don Bosco and won by technical fall over Brent Farrow of North Cedar.

Ryan Berns won by fall over Michael Rivera of the Cedar Hawk Wrestling Club, pinned Jim Gordon of Cedar Falls before lost by forfeit.

Lady tracksters score runner-up finish at Decorah

Only one meet graced the schedule of the Waukon girls track and field team during the most recent week of action. The Tribe made the most of the event, finishing second last Thursday in a five-team competition at Decorah. The Indians had hoped to host their Early Bird meet last Tuesday, April 12, but inclement weather forced the event to be cancelled.

Harpers Ferry Fire Department Wild Game Feed raises funds for equipment

The Harpers Ferry Fire Department held its annual Wild Game Feed Saturday, April 16. A record setting crowd filled the Harpers Ferry Fire Station for a meal of various wild game, raffles, and an auction. The benefit began at 3 p.m. and included raffles throughout the evening and the auction at 8 p.m.

Lady linksters trip Charles City, fall to Waverly-SR

Waukon’s girls golf team opened Northeast Iowa Conference action during their recent week on the links. Last Tuesday, the Indians suffered a home loss to Waverly-Shell Rock by a 209-219 count. The Tribe bounced back later in the week to defeat Charles City, 205-209, on the Comets’ home course.

The Indians’ season standing is 2-2, which includes a 1-1 mark in the NEIC.

The Indians got the 2005 NEIC season underway last Tuesday, April 12, hosting Waverly-Shell Rock. The visiting Go-Hawks handed the Tribe a 209-219 loss.

First Baptist hosts 2005 AWANA Grand Prix

The AWANA Clubs of First Baptist Church held their annual Grand Prix Car Race April 6 at the Farmers and Merchants Bank Community Room. Clubbers building a race car for the event included Birk Shaikoski, Logan Winters, Laura Riese, Stephen Dahlstrom, Kim Promnitz, Tony Swehla, Haylee Rathbone, Zach Rathbone, Logan Wood, Taylor O’Connell, Elizabeth Riese, Cora Rubendall, Marissa Martins, Realynn Hawkins, Michael Roth, Andrea Hawkins, Katie Riese, Heather Van Ruler, Luke Hermanson, Tyler Roth, Jordan Manning, Alissa Schon, Austin Roth, Genny Scholtes, and Andi Treptau.

Effigy Mounds National Monument announces entrance fee rates for 2005

Entrance fees at Effigy Mounds National Monument will remain at $5 per vehicle and $3 per person for the calendar year 2005. The fee is charged during the spring, summer, and fall and covers all park programs, the visitor center film, museum exhibits, and the monument’s hiking trails. There is no fee charged for those ages 16 years or younger. However, beginning January 1, 2006, entrance fees will be charged throughout the national park system for those 16 years old; 15 years and younger will remain free.

Sandra Lipke



Sandra L. Lipke, 46, of Waukon, Iowa, died unexpectedly Monday, April 4, 2005, at her apartment in Waukon. A private ceremony celebrating her life was held by her immediate family Sunday, April 17. Arrangements were handled by Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Catherine Hanson



Catherine D. Knuppe Hanson, 89, of Waukon, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Friday, April 15 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Benefit Horse Clinic will be April 30

Great Strides of Northeast Iowa, a local therapeutic horseback riding group, will benefit from a horse clinic to be held Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Show Barn at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds in Decorah.

Waukon man charged in connection with meth lab


Jones-
Justin L. Jones, 20, of Waukon, was found guilty of a pair of charges after he admitted to using a methamphetamine lab on property south of Waukon.
