Passing of Pope John Paul II has local impact; Fr. Jerry Blake recalls meeting

With the continuous coverage of the massive crowd of mourners in Rome this past week serving as evidence of the worldwide impact of the death of Pope John Paul II, the effects were also felt on a more local level here by not only those who live here and know the Holy Father from afar, but also a native son who was fortunate enough to have held a brief audience with the Pope as he studied to follow in his footsteps.

Letter to the Standard's Editor

To the Editor:

After numerous articles and notices regarding the misuse of the facility at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds, I was very surprised to see the flagrant dumping, primarily in the area of the “burning pile”. It was my first trip to the area this spring, and I had hoped that the past problems would have been resolved.

The People's Business

These lists, snatched from their laptops, PDAs and simple desk pads, offer keen insight into the moves and motives of our leaders at this critical time.

History will thank us.

and then I wrote...

... about some miscellaneous matters.

It was interesting, as a practicing Catholic, to hear in the wake of the pope’s death all the suggestions being made about the direction the Catholic Church should take.

The gist of most of the suggestions was that the church should become less Catholic and more catholic. With the capital C or the lower case c, the words have different meanings. The C word means the “ancient, undivided church” claiming apostolic origin, disciplines and sacraments. With the small c, the word means liberal in beliefs, tastes and views.
