Caregiver Support Groups meet monthly in three Allamakee County locations



Caregiver Support Groups sponsored by Northland Agency on Aging will meet in three locations in Allamakee County each month.

In New Albin: Second Thursday of each month at the Town House, New Albin Savings Bank at 10 a.m.

In Waukon: Second Thursday of each month at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 8 Fifth Street S.W., Main level, at 2 p.m.

In Lansing: Third Wednesday of each month at Thornton Heights Assisted Living, 1329 Main Street at 2 p.m.

Meeting minutes of the Allamakee County Historical Preservation Commission from March 29 gathering

The Allamakee County Historical Preservation Commission met in open meeting Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. at 408 3rd Ave. NE, in Waukon.

Present were Gloria Jackson, Lois Wiedenmann, Karen Galema and Larry Wolfe. Absent were Jean Huffey, Betty Helgerson, and Betty Zarwell.

Mentoring Bowl-a-thon set for April 16 offers fun

Helping Services for Northeast Iowa is proud to announce the first ever Mentoring Bowl-a-thon being held April 16 at Oneota Lanes in Decorah. The bowl-a-thon has two main purposes: to raise money for events that mentors, mentees, and family members attend; and to convince area positive role models to become mentors.

The Mentoring Bowl-a-thon is for everyone to take part in, they do not have to be involved in mentoring. Teams of four participants will bowl together April 16. The teams can be any combination of adults and youth.

Historic Preservation awards



The Iowa Historic Preservation Alliance is seeking nominations for its annual Preservation at Its Best awards. Any property of historic interest that has been renovated or restored during 2004 is eligible. Award categories include: small commercial, large commercial, small residential, large residential, rural, and public buildings and archeological sites. A special projects category is included for non-building projects.

Waukon Nursery School announces plans for new all-day preschool option

Waukon Nursery School has announced plans to offer an all-day preschool program for children preparing to enter kindergarten in 2006. The all-day program will supplement, not replace, the school's half-day programs for 3-4 year old students and 4-5 year old students.

Easement protects 312 acres along Upper Iowa River

A voluntary land use agreement now permanently protects more than half a mile of scenic shoreline along both sides of the Upper Iowa River. The site is located along the most canoed section of the river, about two miles downstream of Kendallville.

The agreement was made between Coldwater Creek Farms, LLC (CCF), the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF) and the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). It preserves 312 acres along both banks of the river in Winneshiek County.

Living Wreath workshop set for April 18 in area

Imagine a wreath that lasts for years, filled with living plants that thrive with minimal care and even bloom. Look up living wreaths on the Internet and you’ll see wreaths that sell for several hundred dollars. Yet, it’s not difficult to make your own.

At 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 18, ISU Extension of Allamakee County will have a Living Wreath Workshop at the Lee and Ruth White farm located at 462 Forest Mills Road near Postville.
