“Joyful Noise” to perform at Center Baptist this Saturday



The gospel duo of “Joyful Sound” will be presenting a 7 p.m. concert this Saturday, April 9 at the Center Baptist Church, located at 1555 Trout Run Road, rural Lansing. Some may remember that this same duo was at the Center Baptist Church’s 150th Anniversary celebration in August of 2003.

Extension Workshop offers Better Kid Care



“Easy Ways to Boost Kids’ Brain Power” is the title of a workshop being presented by Iowa State University Extension. All childcare providers, teachers of young children, and interested parents can participate in a workshop being held Thursday, April 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Allamakee County Extension office, 21 Allamakee Street in Waukon, Phone 563-568-6345.

Athlete of the Week

Early in the 2005 track season, Kyle is asserting himself as a hurdling presence not only in northeast Iowa, but across the state. The senior focuses his talents on the high hurdles events, winning the 110-meter event in 15.26 last Thursday during the Tribe’s first outdoor meet of the season. During the Indians’ indoor schedule, Kyle also proven he’s among the best, taking second in the 55-meter highs at the Northeast Iowa Conference indoor meet and finishing fifth and eighth, respectively, at the Iowa State and Dickinson meets while competing against athletes from across the entire state.

Frick, Waters, Hustvet take top spots in 2005 Final Four contest

After three weeks of basketball madness, The Standard has crowned the winner of the 2005 NCAA Final Four contest. The field was fairly tight with nearly 60 percent of competitors choosing either Illinois or North Carolina to sweep through the bracket. In all, the contest’s top 31 finishers selected the Tarheels to top the Illini for the championship.

Boys open outdoor track season with 4th place finish at Waukon Early Bird meet

The Indians had a great night to run. Waukon coach Joe O’Neill mentioned, “The weather was very nice. It was a little on the windy side, but I think the weather was as good as we could hope for for March.”

Indian track and field, golf teams in action this week

Waukon Senior High’s boys and girls golf and track and field teams are gearing up for another week of competition.

Waukon’s golf team were scheduled to tee off for the first time of the year Tuesday. Next on the schedule for the girls is next Monday’s contest with Waverly-Shell Rock. Waukon hosts the 4 p.m. event.

The boys golf squad also matches the Go-Hawks next Monday, however their meet is in Waverly.

Reiser leads 3A Select in IGCA/Gatorade All-Star Series

Samantha Reiser paced the 3A Select Squad in a 73-67 loss to Class 4A last Saturday, April 2 at the Iowa Girls Coaches Association/Gatorade All-Star Basketball Series at Hennessy Rec Center at Mount Mercy College.

Reiser, a senior at Waukon Senior High, went eight-for-17 from the field and was two-for-two at the free throw line to finish with a team-high 18 points. She also led 3A Select on the defensive end with three steals.

Zahariev scores 1,000 points

Erin Zahariev of Hamburg, N.Y., reached a milestone in her basketball career this past February. She scored her 1,000th career point Feb. 8 in front of her home crowd. Zahariev has started on the varsity squad since her freshman year. Coach DeJohn stated that Zahariev’s feat was a huge success since the team’s offense is not centered on her, but spread throughout the squad.

Participants sought for Iowa Senior Olympics



The Iowa Senior Olympics will be held on June 9-12, 2005, in West Des Moines. Don’t be a spectator; join us for the action. You’re never too old to play!

The Iowa Senior Olympics is a four-day Olympic-style sporting event for men and women age 50 and older, with more than 55 events and competition in ten age categories. Athletes must be 50 years old on or before Dec. 31, 2005, to compete. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded in each age bracket for every event!
