The Kee boys basketball team remained in search of an end to what has become a double-digit non-winning streak, coming as close as the Hawks have been able to during that stretch. The Hawk hoopsters came up just short by their narrowest of margins so far, 63-61, at Edgewood-Colesburg Tuesday, January 13 before falling just five points shy in suffering a 50-45 loss at Postville Friday, January 16.
Holding a 1-12 overall season record, 1-9 in the Upper Iowa Conference, the Hawks were scheduled to return home for two consecutive home games, against Turkey Valley Tuesday, January 20 and De Soto, WI Thursday, January 22, before traveling to West Salem, WI to play Coulee Christian Friday, January 23. Kee will then finish out its regular season at home, starting that final three-week stretch Tuesday, January 27 against Starmont and Friday, January 30 at West Central.

The Kee girls basketball team chalked up another three victories to push its current win streak to the brink of double digits with nine victories in a row, doing so with results on each end of the success spectrum from very narrow to very wide margins, and even one in between. The Lady Hawks pulled out a strong threat to that streak with a 56-54 win in overtime at Edgewood-Colesburg Tuesday, January 13 before winning back-to-back games to end the week, including a 54-43 home win over MFL/MarMac Thursday, January 15 and a 62-24 rout at Postville Friday, January 16.
The Hawks were scheduled to host Turkey Valley Tuesday, January 20 in an effort to avenge their only loss on the season so far. Kee will then have a week off from competition to prepare for its final stretch of the regular season, which begins with a Tuesday, January 27 home game with Starmont and a Friday, January 30 home contest with West Central.

The Waukon girls basketball team ended up playing just one game this past week, as Mother Nature claimed the Indians’ second contest of the week, a Thursday, January 8 home game with MFL/MarMac now postponed until January 29 due to winter weather. In its single game this past week the Tribe suffered a 74-44 loss at Class 3A eighth-rated Crestwood. Falling to a 2-7 overall record, 1-4 in the Northeast Iowa Conference, the Indians were next scheduled to play back-to-back nights, at North Fayette Valley Monday, January 12 and at home against Oelwein Tuesday, January 13, before traveling to Class 4A sixth-rated Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, January 16. The Indians will then host Charles City Tuesday, January 20 before playing at Decorah Friday, January 23.

The Waukon boys basketball team played to an undefeated week in a busy schedule of three games to extend its current winning streak to four games since the holiday break. The Tribe opened the week with back-to-back home triumphs, 70-39 over Kee Monday, January 5 and 67-49 over Crestwood Tuesday, January 6, before pulling out a 59-58 home thriller over Prairie du Chien, WI Saturday, January 10.
“We’ve talked to the guys about not being satisfied,” Waukon boys basketball coach Jed Hemann said. “We expected to play better after the holiday break. We have been playing better, but these are not the best games we will have all season.”

The Kee girls basketball team posted a pair of victories in Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) play this past week to improve its season record to 11-1, 7-1 in the UIC, and extend its current winning streak to six games. The Lady Hawks had little trouble at single-win West Central with a 57-32 win Tuesday, January 6 before pulling off a 43-42 thriller at home against Central Elkader Friday, January 9 in a game rescheduled from the night before.

The Waukon wrestling team ended up having a very busy 24 hours to end this past week without a team score victory in six contested duals, facing some schools they rarely, if ever, get to see on the wrestling mat. The Indians fell to Charles City, 53-12, in a Friday, January 9 Northeast Iowa Conference dual at Decorah rescheduled from the previous evening due to winter weather. They were also originally scheduled to wrestle the host school at that same event, but both teams opted out of that match-up since they will be facing off later this week in another Northeast Iowa Conference dual meet in Waukon and each also had a full tournament slate the next day. The mat Tribe then came up shy in five dual meets wrestled at the New Hampton Duals the next day, Saturday, January 10, falling to the host school, 57-16; to Southeast Polk, 41-22; to South Tama, 57-19; to Waterloo East, 40-26; and to Austin, MN, 42-33.

The Kee boys basketball team suffered from some slow starts it could never quite recover from in falling in all three of its contests this past week. The Hawks fell in back-to-back nights of road games, 70-39 at Waukon Monday, January 5 and 76-42 at West Central Tuesday, January 6, before suffering a similar fate at Central Elkader, 64-52, Friday, January 9.
“It was a tough week in a variety of ways,” Kee boys basketball coach Pat Wagner said. “Our schedule was strong. We played arguably the two best teams on our schedule on back-to-back nights and then traveled to Elkader Friday after weather problems kept us out of the gym on Wednesday and Thursday. And we cannot afford to not be in a gym.  However, we can’t and won’t make any excuses; we simply  have to get better.”

The Waukon girls basketball team returned to competition following the holiday break, but came up short in a non-conference contest at home against Clayton Ridge Friday, January 2. The visiting Eagles featured the shuffling rotation of a trio of six-foot-plus players in the paint combined with some sharp-shooting guard play to eventually pull away from just a four-point halftime advantage and hand the Indians a 65-43 defeat.
The Indians were next scheduled to play at Class 3A ninth-rated Crestwood Tuesday, January 6 before hosting MFL/MarMac Thursday, January 8. The basketball Tribe will then play back-to-back nights, at North Fayette Valley Monday, January 12 and at home against Oelwein Tuesday, January 13, before traveling to Class 4A ninth-rated Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, January 16.

The Waukon wrestling team returned to action following the holiday break with a full evening of competition, wrestling at the Crestwood Duals in Cresco Saturday, January 3. The Indians won two of the four dual meets they wrestled at the event, claiming victories over a short-handed Fillmore Central squad out of Minnesota, 54-12, and St. Ansgar, 42-24. The two losses came to South Winneshiek, 45-25, and to the host Crestwood Cadets, 53-16.
The Indians now hold an overall record of 4-6, 0-3 in the Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC). The Indians will next wrestle in a NEIC double dual at Decorah against the host Vikings and Charles City Thursday, January 8 before competing in the New Hampton Tournament Saturday, January 10. The Tribe will then host Decorah Thursday, January 15.

The Kee boys basketball team returned to action following the holidays with a Saturday, January 3 home game against Wapsie Valley. The Hawks turned in a consistent offensive effort of mid-teen scoring throughout all four quarters of the contest, that effort being good enough to outscore the visiting Warriors in the second and third frames but not quite keeping pace with Wapsie Valley’s first and third frame production of nearly two dozen points in each on the way to a 71-64 Kee defeat.
Holding a 1-7 overall season record, the Hawks were scheduled to hit the road for a busy week this week, playing at Waukon Monday, January 5, at West Central Tuesday, January 6 and at Central Elkader Friday, January 9. Kee will remain on the road for the following week, playing at Edgewood-Colesburg Tuesday, January 13 before doing likewise at Postville Friday, January 16.
