Waukon Corn Days celebration taking place throughout this week

This year’s Waukon Corn Days celebration is underway this week through this Saturday, August 3, with the Heritage Parade kicking things off Monday, July 29.

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce is seeking volunteers to help husk corn Wednesday, July 31, beginning at 3 p.m. Call Waukon Chamber of Commerce Director Stephanie Dugan at 563-568-4110 for more information.

In between those starting and ending points lies a variety of other events for anyone and everyone to enjoy.

"Music on Main" to begin Monday

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce will be kicking off its traditional "Music on Main" downtown entertainment events this Monday, June 24 at 6 p.m. Michelle Lynn of Decorah will perform in the Visitor Center and Area Development office courtyard located at 101 West Main Street in Waukon.

Alyssa Petersburg joins Waukon Police Department

The Waukon Police Department has hired a new officer, Alyssa Petersburg, as of May 29. Petersburg is a native of Decorah, graduating from Decorah High School in 2009.
She has since graduated from Upper Iowa University in December of 2012, where she majored in Conservation Management and minored in Criminology and also played soccer for Upper Iowa. "I've always wanted to get into law enforcement, ever since I was a little kid," Officer Petersburg explained. "I'm excited to have this opportunity to work with the Waukon department and be close to my hometown."

"Mad Mixture" program held at Robey Memorial Library

One hundred and two individuals attended the "Mad Mixture" program held at Robey Memorial Library in Waukon Thursday, June 6. "Mad Mixture" is one of the Grout Museum District’s Outreach Programs, and it is designed to nurture a child’s love of science. With the use of liquid nitrogen, those in attendance learned about the three phases of matter: solids, liquids and gas (with lots of explosions included) from Grout Museum presenters Hannah Filkins and Tim Gau (left to right in photo).

Community Pride Memory Garden continues to expand within Waukon City Park

In the fall of 2009, the Waukon Community Pride Committee completed phase one of the Indian Springs Memory Garden located in Waukon City Park. This included the building of three berms and complementing the berms with 70 perennial flowers of 17 different species.
In memory of her parents, Ann Meierkord donated $2,000 to the Memory Garden toward the development of the berms. The Lions Club and Curtis Steel added to the Memory Garden by providing the resources for the bridge and the gazebo and stairs down to the garden.
