Allamakee County Flood and Storm Relief announces second round of funding

The Allamakee County Flood and Storm Relief Fund Committee has recently awarded $10,157.62 in reimbursement payments to homeowners and businesses who applied for funding to replace water heaters and/or furnaces destroyed in the storms of last June. Because of the generous donations that have been made to the Flood and Storm Relief Fund, more money is now available for a second round of funding assistance to aid homeowners and businesses.

Visioning for the Future survey to begin in Waukon and surrounding area September 23

A community survey to gather public input on important local issues will be distributed to randomly selected households in the Allamakee Community School District area starting Monday, September 23. This survey is being led by the Waukon Works Committee in partnership with Iowa State University Community Economic Development Extension. A 12-member steering committee of local leaders is overseeing this project.

Humane Society launches Capital Campaign to build Adoption Center

The Humane Society of Northeast Iowa (HSNEI) announces the public phase of the “Help Us Help Them” Adoption Center Capital Campaign. The Adoption Center groundbreaking is scheduled to happen in Spring 2014. Over $449,000, or 75% of the campaign goal, was raised in the private phase of the campaign thanks to generous donations from supporters in the five northeast Iowa communities HSNEI serves. HSNEI now turns to the public to reach the campaign goal of $600,000.

Holidays will affect rural garbage sites

The rural garbage sites in Allamakee County will see a slight change in their pick-up schedule after a holiday closure, according to Allamakee County Solid Waste Director Dave Mooney. For future reference, if a garbage site is unavailable the day of a holiday (such as the upcoming New Year's holiday), the garbage truck will be at that affected site the following evening. All other sites will run per their normal weekly schedule, with no changing of the hours or day of pick-up.

Robey Memorial Library's Summer Reading Program comes to a close, crowns top readers

The “Dig into Reading” Summer Reading Program (SRP) 2013 at Robey Memorial Library in Waukon came to an end in early August. Family Night kicked off the program July 8 and featured local story lady Sue Kiesau and her beloved puppets, including Bernie and Peanut Butter. A special highlight of the evening was Bob Kann of Madison, WI, who presented the program “Finding the Magic in Reading: Can You Dig It” in an effort to motivate kids to read through his storytelling, juggling and magic.
