SKYWARN training to be held in Waukon April 14

The National Weather Service (NWS) will be holding a SKYWARN Severe Weather Spotter Training class in Waukon Wednesday, April 14. The training will be held at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds, 705 Allamakee Street – Pavilion Building, starting at 6:30 p.m.
The class will last around two hours and includes a multimedia presentation.

Plans being made for Waukon High School Project Prom

Waukon High School Prom 2010 is scheduled for Saturday, April 24. As the event approaches, parents and other local volunteers are working behind the scenes to organize what will be a fun-filled, substance-free, post-prom event.
This year's post-prom will be held at the former Waukon Junior High School gymnasium from midnight to 4 a.m. following prom activities at Waukon High School.

Dr. Steve Perkins to speak at Men's Lenten Supper

A Men's Ecumenical Lenten Supper will be held Sunday, March 28 at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and a presentation will take place at 7 p.m. featuring Dr. Steven Perkins as speaker. A meal will follow.
All men in the community from all denominations are invited to attend the Men's Ecumenical Lenten Supper.

Jenny Stegen to speak at Lenten Breakfast

The annual Lenten Breakfast events begin at 6:45 a.m. each Thursday during Lent and take place weekly at local churches, with just one of those events remaining, March 25 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Waukon.
Scheduled to speak at the March 25 Lenten breakfast at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church will be Jenny Stegen, who will share her thoughts, beliefs, and experiences on the spirit-filled child. Jenny and her husband, Lee, are Waukon natives and are happy to be raising their four children in this community.

Allamakee County Food Shelf requests RSVP volunteers

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is seeking volunteers to serve in the Allamakee County Food Shelf in Waukon. Alaine Meier, coordinator of the Food Shelf, reports a significant increase in the need for volunteers since the economic recession has begun. Several people who can lift and carry boxes weighing up to 50 pounds are needed Thursdays from 8:45 a.m.- 1 p.m.

Orders being taken for memorial bricks

With Memorial Day approaching, the Allamakee County Veterans Memorial Committee would like to remind those interested that orders for individual memorial bricks are still being taken. To date, over 1,200 individual bricks have been placed on the memorial site on the courthouse lawn.

Art exhibit by Judith Engle at Robey Memorial Library

Waukon High School and Junior High School art teacher Judith Engle currently has an art exhibit on display at Robey Memorial Library in Waukon through the month of March. The exhibit consists of drawings she completed of Meskwaki and Ho-Chunk dancers while they performed at Effigy Mounds National Monument as part of a class requirement for summer classes held for teachers. In 2007, the Ho-Chunk Dancers & Drummers performed at Effigy Mounds, and last summer the Meskwaki Nation held a day-long festival at the national park.

Waukon Lions Club annual Variety Show is Saturday

The Waukon Lions Club 21st Annual Variety Show is scheduled for Saturday, March 20 at the Waukon High School Auditorium. Doors for the event open at 6:15 p.m., with performances beginning at 7 p.m.
