Waukon Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet is February 26

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce will be holding its Annual Banquet Friday, February 26 at the Waukon Banquet Center. Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., with the meal (including fish on the menu this year) scheduled for 7 p.m. and the banquet program to get underway at 8 p.m., including announcement of this year's “Person of the Year” and performances by members of the Waukon High School Vocal Music Department, in lieu of a featured speaker.

Seeking Mrs. Waukon contestants to compete in Mrs. Iowa Pageant

Carl and Faith Schway, the Iowa directors for the Mrs. America Pageant system, are announcing that the search is on for the new Mrs. Waukon. Once selected, the community representative will then advance on to compete in the Mrs. Iowa Pageant to be held June 5. City and county titleholders will compete to win over $10,000.00 in prizes, one of which includes an all expenses paid trip to the national Mrs. America Pageant.

Lenten Breakfast events to begin February 25

The annual Lenten Breakfast events will begin for women next Thursday, February 25 at St. Patrick Church in Waukon. The women’s events begin at 6:45 a.m. each Thursday during Lent and will take place weekly at local churches according to the following schedule:
February 25 - St. Patrick Catholic Church
March 4 - St. John's Lutheran Church
March 11 - Zalmona Presbyterian Church
March 18 - Zion United Church of Christ
March 25 - St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Waukon Living Center obtains recertification

Following the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeal (DIA) evaluation January 28, the Waukon Living Center Assisted Living Program received notification of recertification effective from February 5, 2010 through February 4, 2012.

Sunday School organizes hospital kits for children at VMH

Pictured are the Sunday School students, grades kindergarten through sixth, from St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon holding the hospital kits they recently put together as their service project for local children in Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH). The lesson "Feeding of the 5,000", was taught by Mary Jackson over a three-week period and was part of the unit Faith Challenges.

Becky Lomen of Waukon wins $250,000 prize in "Lucky Diamonds" scratch game

A Waukon woman said she was shocked when she headed to town for sweets for her mother-in-law and came home with a $250,000 prize!
Becky Lomen, 59, said she drove into town from her dairy farm west of Waukon to get a piece of pie for her mother-in-law, who had been sick lately. While she was out, she picked up two “Lucky Diamonds” instant-scratch tickets for herself, which she scratched in her car.

Allamakee County Sno-Blazers encourage respect and safety

The local snowmobile trails are now open. The Allamakee Sno-Blazers encourage riders to show respect and stay on the designated trail. Many hours of preparation by trail bosses and crews have prepared a 150+ mile trail system to showcase the natural beauty of the county. However, it is a privilege trails are accessible and groomed. Several landowners have graciously allowed access across their property and the Sno-Blazers ask riders to show respect so that all may enjoy this winter sport. Trails have been closed when snowmobilers have not respected property rights in the past.

Mentoring programs at Helping Services for Northeast Iowa invite all mentors and mentees from Howard, Allamakee and Winneshiek counties to enjoy an afternoon of activities Saturday, February 20 from 1-3:30 p.m. at the Waukon Wellness Center.

St. Patrick's Day Parade March 14

The annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in Waukon has been scheduled for Sunday, March 14. The event will begin at 1 p.m. Further details will be released as they become available.
