Local law enforcement reports sTEP statistics

Law enforcement agencies across the state of Iowa participated in an initiative urging motorists to buckle up and obey all traffic laws during the Thanksgiving holiday. From November 23-29, the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office, the New Albin Police Department, the Postville Police Department and the Waukon Police Department participated in this wave of enforcement, known as sTEP (special Traffic Enforcement Program.) Participation was in an effort to cut the chances of serious accidents/injuries and fatalities.

LC Signs and Graphics establishes itself in Waukon, surrounding area

LC Signs and Graphics opened for business just west of Waukon on Highway 76 in January. Owner Lori Cahoon, who has worked in the sign industry for 10 years, says she decided to open her own business to be closer to home, her husband of five years, Blair, and their children, Connor (3) and Caden (18 months).

Chamber of Commerce seeking nominations for "Person of the Year"; Nominations due January 15

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations from community residents for Waukon’s “Person of the Year” honor. This is the 13th year the Chamber will bestow the honor upon a Waukon resident fitting the award’s criteria.

Picture Perfect Auto Detailing makes "clean" start on West Main Street

Picture Perfect Auto Detailing opened for business on West Main Street in Waukon in late summer of this year. Owners Andrew Gallagher and Cameron Smith, both 2007 graduates of Waukon High School, say that both of their fathers owned businesses in the area and when they came up with the idea one night, they decided to run with it in Waukon, keeping the business local.

Waukon is "perfect fit" for Modern Agricultural System Designs, Inc.

Modern Agricultural System Designs, Inc. opened for business in Waukon September 2, specializing in both engineering and sales. “The primary work will be to help dairymen clean up stray voltage,” says owner Daniel Meyer. “I go for the root of the problem with technical equipment to get there quicker and cheaper. Cleaning up stray voltage helps improve milk quality (lower SCC). I also work to help residents and business owners clean up harmonics caused by fluorescent lighting, computer and plasma TVs, and reduce their electric bills.”

NE Iowa WWII Honor Tour seeks interested veterans for bus trip

Calling all World War II veterans, their families, and supporting veterans organizations. A grassroots effort is underway to plan a five-day bus trip for WWII veterans to visit Washington, D.C. to see the WWII Memorial. Those scenes that have been on television are true; visitors to the Memorial line the sidewalks and applaud the veterans as they arrive. This Northeast Iowa WWII Honor Tour will be free of charge to interested WWII veterans. The first step is to find if there are WWII veterans from Northeast Iowa who are interested in such an opportunity.

Operation Christmas Child November 20

Share the joy of giving to needy children by participating in Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project. Once again this year, local volunteers from around Allamakee County are being asked to gather items to share with children overseas who are suffering from disease, famine, war, terrorism and natural disaster. Through the ministry of Samaritan’s Purse, local residents have an opportunity to impact the lives of needy children around the world.

Wide variety of topics addressed at regular Waukon City Council session

The Waukon City Council met in regular session the evening of Monday, November 16. The full Council was in attendance to address a lengthy, 15-item Regular Business agenda.
To get things started, the Council approved the resolution amending the current City Budget for fiscal year ending June 30, 2010. This was a follow-up from a previous meeting.

Marty Blocker earns Eagle Scout rank; Court of Honor to be held this Sunday

Marty Blocker of Boy Scout Troop 64 in Waukon will be honored at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor Sunday, November 22 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. Blocker appeared before the Eagle Board of Review September 21 and was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. Blocker is one of approximately four percent of all Boy Scouts nationally who attain the rank of Eagle Scout.
