Fire Department to conduct Operation EDITH in Waukon Wednesday, October 7

In conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, October 4-10, the Waukon Area Fire Protection District encourages Waukon residents to take part in Operation EDITH (Exit Drills in the Home) Wednesday, October 7 as a way of reinforcing some of the safety measures taught by local fire volunteers in the elementary schools that same week throughout the local school district.

Waukon FFA earns 2009 State Champion Title in Dairy Cattle Evaluation

The 2009 Iowa FFA Dairy Cattle Career Development Event was held in conjunction with the Blue Ribbon Dairy Classic in West Union Saturday, September 19. Twenty-four teams and 87 individuals participated in this year’s Career Development Event designed to provide students an opportunity to display their knowledge and skills in the area of dairy cattle selection and management.

Allamakee County groups hosting Family Day event September 28 in Waukon

Community Connections, Allamakee County Substance Abuse Prevention and Helping Services for Northeast Iowa will be hosting a Family Day event Monday, September 28 at the Waukon High School cafeteria from 5-7 p.m. A free meal will be provided and fun activities will keep the night entertaining for the whole family. Join other families from all over the country in celebrating Family Day September 28 by eating dinner together as a family.
September 8 the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors signed a Family Day Proclamation dedicating September 28 as Family Day.

Random drug search conducted at high school, junior high in Waukon

Tuesday, September 15 a police dog supported by the Postville Police Department conducted a random, unannounced search of the Junior High/High School building in Waukon for drugs. The search was conducted through all hallway lockers and students' backpacks or bags in both schools.
School officials report there were no drugs found. “Our priority is to make sure we have a safe, healthy environment so that students can learn," Allamakee Community School District Superintendent Dave Herold explained. "Random drills help to maintain this learning environment.”

Big Pumpkin Contest and much more this Sunday

The Big Pumpkin Contest, which had its area debut last fall at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon, will take place this Sunday, September 27. A new addition to this year's event will be pumpkin decorating and carving contests.
The Big Pumpkin Contest will get its start with weigh-in at 9:30 a.m., with those big pumpkins being on display that day and this year's winners being crowned at a 1 p.m. awards ceremony. In addition to the biggest pumpkin, honors will also be bestowed upon the ugliest pumpkin and the best looking pumpkin.

Car vs. pedestrian accident results in fatal injuries

Rachel King of Waukon, age 73, died Monday, September 7 as a result of injuries sustained when she was struck by a car at the corner of East Main and Clinton Streets in Waukon Wednesday, September 2 at around 9:45 a.m. According to the accident report filed with the Iowa Department of Transportation, Brittanie Kay Lightfoot of Waukon, age 20, was traveling east on East Main Street and turning right onto Clinton Street when her vehicle struck King.
