Snowmobile Safety Course offered

A Snowmobile Safety Class will be offered by the Allamakee County Conservation Board at the Allamakee County Conservation Board Office Saturday, January 9. The Conservation Board Office is located at 427 North First Street in Harpers Ferry (at the Public Boat Landing in Harpers Ferry).
The class will begin at 8 a.m. and will finish at 3 p.m. Minimum age for the class is 12 years of age and adults are welcome to attend the class. There is a $5 registration for the class payable the day of class.

Innovative Ag Services makes donation to Food Shelf

Gary Hesla (left) of Innovative Ag Services in Waukon recently presented Allamakee County Food Shelf Director Alaine Meier with a local donation of $484. Land o' Lakes Regional Coop, of which Innovative Ag Services is a member, added a donation of $466. Meier said that every dollar donated to the food shelf is used to purchase as much as $11 dollars worth of food, which is then distributed to those in need in Allamakee County.

Allamakee County Sno-Blazers encourage riders to show respect and ride safely

The local snowmobile trails are now open. The Allamakee Sno-Blazers encourage riders to show respect and stay on the designated trail. Many hours of preparation by trail bosses and crews have prepared a 150+ mile trail system to showcase the natural beauty of the county. However, it is a privilege trails are accessible and groomed. Several landowners have graciously allowed access across their property and the Sno-Blazers ask riders to show respect so that all may enjoy this winter sport. Trails have been closed when snowmobilers have not respected property rights in the past.

New 4-H youth leadership in Allamakee County

The Allamakee County Youth Committee proudly announces the appointment of 15 youth in grades 9-12 to the 2009-2010 4-H County Council. The Council is responsible for several citizenship and leadership projects throughout the year, including the Junior Halloween Party, Youth Lock-In, Waukon Easter Egg Hunt and collecting items for the American Red Cross. Leading the group are advisors Teresa Myers, Marci Vinsand, and Kris Fahey.

Snow removal for businesses discussed by Waukon City Council

The Waukon City Council met in regular session the evening of Monday, December 21. The full Council was in attendance.
Under the Public Comments portion of the meeting, Rose Ward returned to question the mayor and Council on complaints she had against the Police Department for their handling of an alleged assault against her. Ward claimed to have asked that charges be filed, but nothing had been done. Mayor Keith Schroeder explained that the issue had been reviewed, and that Police Chief Clark Bollman would contact her with more information .

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations from community residents for Waukon’s “Person of the Year” honor. This is the 13th year the Chamber will bestow the honor upon a Waukon resident fitting the award’s criteria.

The Iowa State Patrol reports a two-vehicle accident north of Monona in Allamakee County claimed the lives of two individuals from Mount Hope, WI Saturday, December 12.
