Insurance and zoning among the many issues addressed at regular Waukon City Council meeting

The Waukon City Council met in regular session the evening of Monday, February 1. Mayor Loren Beneke was absent, so Mayor Pro-tem Trent Mitchell filled in. Councilman Joe Cunningham was also absent.
Under the Departmental Reports, Water and Sewer Superintendent Robert Campbell explained that his department had dealt with two broken water mains in the past week, but repairs had been made. Such breaks seem to be common during stretches of colder than normal winter weather.

Waukon resident Dwight Jones to compete on "The Singing Bee" Friday

Dwight Jones of Waukon is scheduled to be a contestant on the nationally televised game show “The Singing Bee” this Friday, February 5 at 8 p.m. Contestants compete using their knowledge of song lyrics to score points, following the motto “You don’t have to sing it well, you just have to sing it right”.  The show airs on the CMT television network.
Jones auditioned for the show in Chicago, IL in mid-October and visited Hollywood, CA for the taping of his show in early November.

Waukon Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet is February 26

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce will be holding its Annual Banquet Friday, February 26 at the Waukon Banquet Center. Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., with the meal (including fish on the menu this year) scheduled for 7 p.m. and the banquet program to get underway at 8 p.m., including announcement of this year's “Person of the Year” and performances by members of the Waukon High School Vocal Music Department, in lieu of a featured speaker.

Waukon awarded funds through "Branching Out"

Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), an Alliant Energy company, and Trees Forever announced that they will award $134,198.70 to 49 Iowa communities and/or organizations through their Branching Out program this spring. Among those awarded funds is a $2,000 grant distributed to the City of Waukon.

Snowmobile Safety Class hosted by Allamakee County Conservation Board

Despite single digit temperatures, over 30 people participated and completed the annual snowmobile safety class conducted by the Allamakee County Conservation Board in Harpers Ferry January 9. During the class students experienced a combination of class room presentations and outdoor hands-on instruction. Topics included snowmobile maintenance and mechanical operation, laws and regulations, first aid, and safe operation procedures when on the trail.
